Description:

“Der Tag ist him, die Sonne gehet nieder” (The day is over, the sun goes down) is a 1712 nine 4-line stanza song of care and protection by pietist hymnwriter Johann Christoph Rube (c1665-1746), based on the Guillaume Franc 1542 Geneva Psalter melody (Zahn 923), “O höchster Gott, o unser lieber Herre” (O supreme God, O our dear Lord), and also published in Leipzig in 1592. It is known in English as “It is a thing most wonderful” (EG 46). Its alternate title is “Die Sonn hat sich mit ihren Ganz gewendet” (The sun has turned with its brilliance) set to the Joshua Stegmann 1630 seven 4-line stanza hymn of thanks and heavenly rest, with the same melody. Neither is found in the NLGB. J.S. This setting is a four–part realization of a two–part chorale (with figured bass) from the Schemelli Gesangbuch. The chorale appears in the Schemelli under the title "Der Tag ist hin, die Sonne gehet nieder", a text by Johann Christoph Rube (1714). (See Chorale No.3 on p.108 of NBA III/2.1).

English Translation

1. Die Sonn hat sich mit ihrem Glanz gewendet
Und, was sie soll, auf diesen Tag vollendet;
Die dunkle Nacht dringt allenthalben zu,
Bringt Menschen, Vieh und alle Welt zur Ruh.

1.The sun is set, in purple clouds descended,
The sky is dark, another day is ended,
Night closes round, in sable mantle dressed,
The world is still, creation is at rest.

2. Ich preise dich, du Herr der Nächt und Tage,
Dass du mich heut vor aller Not und Plage
Durch deine Hand und hochberühmte Macht
Hast unverletzt und frei hindurch gebracht.

2. We praise Thee, Lord, sole God of day and darkness,
Who'st led us safe, prevented by Thy goodness;
or pain nor woe our pathway has beset,
Nor, by Thy might, ought hindered hath or let.

3. Vergib, wo ich bei Tage so gelebet,
Dass ich nach dem, was finster ist, gestrebet;
Lass alle Schuld durch deinen Gnadenschein
In Ewigkeit bei dir verloschen sein.

3. Forgive, O Lord, the sins we have committed,
In Thy good time grant they be all remitted;

To stand in heaven soon meetly in Thy sight!

4. Schaff, dass mein Geist dich ungehindert schaue,
Indem ich mich der trüben Nacht vertraue,
Und dass der Leib auf diesen schweren Tag
Sich seiner Kraft fein sanft erholen mag.

 

5. Vergönne, dass der lieben Engel Scharen
Mich vor der Macht der Finsternis bewahren,
Auf dass ich vor der List und Tyrannei
Der argen Welt im Schlafen sicher sei.

 

6. Herr, wenn mich wird die lange Nacht bedecken
Und in die Ruh des tiefen Grabes strecken,
So blicke mich mit deinen Augen an,
Daraus ich Licht im Tode nehmen kann.

 

7. Und lass hernach zugleich mit allen Frommen
Mich zu dem Glanz des andern Lebens kommen,
Da du uns hast den großen Tag bestimmt,
Dem keine Nacht sein Licht und Klarheit nimmt.

7. To where Thou reign'st bring us to live in glory,
And in Thy sight to stand elect before Thee,
When Death's loud trump its summons soundet'a bright,
