Jesu, nun sei gepreiset
Text and Translation of Chorale |
EKG: 39
Author: Johannes Herman (1593)
Chorale Melody: Jesu, nun sei gepreiset | Composer: Anon/Melchior Vulpius (1609) |
This hymn has unusually long verses (14 lines) and, according to Dürr, in Leipzig the last two lines were also repeated to the initial melody. It appears to have been popular in Leipzig (or with Bach?), since Bach used it in three of his New Year Cantatas and in a chorale (Die Kantaten, p182-3) |

1 |
Jesu, nun sei gepreiset
Zu diesem neuen Jahr
Für dein Güt, uns beweiset
In aller Not und G'fahr,,
Daß wir haben erlebet
Die neu fröhliche Zeit,
Die voller Gnaden schwebet
Und ewger Seligkeit;
Daß wir in guter Stille
Das alt Jahr habn erfüllet..
Wir wolln uns dir ergeben
Itzund und immerdar,,
Behüte Leib, Seel und Leben
Hinfort durchs ganze Jahr! |
Jesus, now be praised
at this new year
for your kindness, revealed to us
in all need and danger,
so that we have lived to see
the new joyful time
that hovers full of grace
and eternal blessedness;
so that in good peacefulness we
have completed the old year.
We want to give ourselves to you
now and evermore,
protect body, soul and life
from this time on throughout the whole year! |
2 |
Laß uns das Jahr vollbringen
Zu Lob dem Namen dein,
Daß wir demselben singen
In der Christen Gemein.
Wollst uns das Leben fristen
Durch dein allmächtig Hand,
Erhalt dein liebe Christen
Und unser Vaterland!
Dein Segen zu uns wende,
Gib Fried an allem Ende,
Gib unverfälscht im Lande
Dein seligmachend Wort,
Die Teufel mach zuschanden
Hier und an allem Ort! |
Let us complete the year
with praise for your name,
so that we may sing of this
in the Christian congregation.
If you want us to eke out our existence
through your almighty hand,
support your dear Christians
and our fatherland!
Send your blessing upon us,
grant peace everywhere,
grant unadulterated in the country
your word that brings blessing,
destroy the devils
here and in all places! |
3 |
Dein ist allein die Ehre,
Dein ist allein der Ruhm;
Geduld im Kreuz uns lehre,
Regier all unser Tun,
Bis wir fröhlich abscheiden
Ins ewig Himmelreich,
Zu wahrem Fried und Freude,
Den Heilgen Gottes gleich.
Indes machs mit uns allen
Nach deinem Wohlgefallen:
Solchs singet heut ohn Scherzen
Die christgläubige Schar
Und wünscht mit Mund und Herzen
Ein seligs neues Jahr. |
Yours alone is the honour,
yours alone is the praise;
teach us patience in [bearing the] cross,
govern all our actions,
until we joyfully depart
to the eternal kingdom of heaven,,
to true peace and joy,
like the saints of God.
Meanwhile deal with all of us
according to your pleasure:
thus sings today without jests
the flock of those who believe in Christ
and wishes with voice and heart for
a blessed new year. |
