Da Mein Hertzog funden
Seinen Lebens=Tag!
Freue sich/wer freuen mag/
Daß des Himmels holde Güte
Diese schöne Fürsten=Blüte
An das helle Licht gebracht/
Und uns tausend Lust gemacht. |
O happy hours
For my Duke finds pleasure
In his life’s first day!
Joyful be who can rejoice,
That heaven’s gracious kindness
Did this beauteous princely bloodline
To the day’s bright light bring forth
And in thousands made us glad. |

This land with boundless hope

Yea, even to the sun’s light

Till this day his work hath prospered. |

And how can it other be!
Who self to piety devoteth
And e’er to sincere prudence cleaveth,
Striveth for whatever’s just,
Hath within this life
Gained already
This his crown
Till he goes to heav’n on high. |

Flechtet manchen Freuden=Krantz/
Eure Blumen/ euer Glantz/
Ja ihr selbst betrügt die Zeiten.
Die Kräntze verwelcken, die Farbe verfliegt/
Woran sich die Meinund der Thoren vergnügt. |
1. Just be off, ye things not lasting,
Off with many a wreath of joy,
All your flowers, all your gloss;
Yea, yourselves betray these days
For laurels do yellow, their color’s soon gone
Upon which the mindset of fools so delights. |

2. Wollust und verliebte Sinnen
Schmücken sich mit Myrthen aus;
Bachus mag den Reben=Strauß
Samt dem Epheu lieb gewinnen:
Die Ehre verachtet den nichtigen Pracht/
Und bleibet auf bessere Kräntze bedacht. |
2. Carnal lust and amorous passion
Deck themselves with myrtle wreaths;
Bacchus likes the hanging grapes
With the ivy to claim possession:
But honor disdaineth what’s merely for show
And saveth for worthier laurels his thoughts. |

3. Tugend giebt die besten Blätter/
Tugend hat allein den Preis/
Und ihr edles Lorbeer=Reiß
Trotzet Hitze/ Frost und Wetter.
Sie grünet und blühet/ wenn alles zerfällt/
Weil selber der Himmel ihr Wesen erhält. |
3. Virtue giveth the best of foliage,
Virtue hath alone our praise
And her noble laurels‘ charm
Braveth heat, frost, bad weather.
It greeneth and bloometh when all has decayed,
For heaven itself doth her nature preserve. |

So schmück dich denn/ Durchlauchtes Fürsten=Licht
Der Ehren=Krantz von lauter Tugend=Zweigen/
So kann Dein Haupt in schönster Probe zeigen/
Was GOtt und Recht vor Edle Cronen flicht.
Wir eilen/ den Volckern der Erde zu sagen/
Was unser Augustus vor Früchte getragen. |
So deck out th‘Illustrious princely light
Thou honor’s wreath with nought but virtue’s branches,
Thus can thy head in finest trial show forth
What God and Right for noble crowns contrive.
We hasten the peoples of earth tell all
That this our Augustus produced and accomplished. |

1. Du aber/ großer GOtt / trag unsern Salomon,
Den Du uns mildiglich zu unserm Trost verliehen/
Trag/ heb und pflege Ihn/ uns laß Ihn ewig blühen/
Damit kein Ungemach betrete seinen Thron.
Gib Leben/ Fried und Heil/ und Himmlisches Gedeyen/
So wird sich Hoff und Land/ und Friderica freuen. |
1. But thou, almighty God, sustain, our Solomon,
Whom thou most kindly didst for our comfort lend us
Bear, help, and care for him, for us ever let him flourish
So that no hardship e’re set foot upon his throne.
Grant life and peace and health and heavenly increase
Which do the court and land and Friderica gladden. |

2. Erfreu Ihr Fürsten=Hertz mit Zucker=süsser Lust/
Ihr Glücks=Stern müsse nie verfinstert untergehen/
Ihr Hohes Fürsten=Hauß in vollem Seegen stehen/
Und keine Maladie verletzen Ihre Brust.
Es müsse Ihre Sonn aufs allerhöchste steigen/
Und aller Feinde Fuß vor Ihrem Thron sich neigen. |
Be glad o princely heart with sweet desire,
May thy fortune’s star,darkened, never be extinguished,
Thy lofty princely house, completely blest surviving,
And let no illness ever harm its breast.
Her son to the highest heights must climb
And every foe his foot before his throne must bow. |

3. Der Himmel schaue Sie mit holden Blicken an.
Und wie Er schon so hoch Ihr Fürsten=Hauß geführet/
(Hiermit nimmt Fama und Gloria Abtritt.)
Daß Es bey nahe Cron und güldne Sceepter zieret/
So mach Er alle Welt Ihm völlig unterthan.
Sie aber/ Grosser Fürst/ erlauben mir zu lesen/
Daß Sie ein Gnädger Herr vor Ihren Knecht gewesen. |
3. May heaven look on thee with gentle countenance.
And as it now so high thy princely house hath guided.
(Here Fame and Gloria exeunt.)
That it the crown and golden scepter seem to polish
That he all the world his subject fully make.
Thou, yet, o mighty prince, allow that I may read
That Thou, a gracious lord, for Thy squire have acted. |

Aria 5 addresses the vanity (Eitelkeit) of favoring ephemeral things. Compare BWV 194 for the dedication of an organ, and Dürr’s note, p. 793: “ Satz 4 warnt vor menschlicher Eitelkeit... .”The unidentified librettist of BWV 194 seems to contrast the vanity of human trifles with the house (church) under the watchful eye of God. 1 Kings 8, 29 (Yet attend to the prayer and the supplication of thy servant, O Lord my God, listen to the cry and the prayer which thy servant utters this day, that thine eyes may ever be upon this house night and day)…
