Query ... probably to our American and German colleagues ....
Does anyone know (best: have) 'Goldberg Variations' performed by the famous refugee from nazi Germany - Grete Sultan? Issued as the part of the first volume of her "Legacy" by Concord Concerto label - if I remember correctly... |
Charlie Ervin McCarn wrote (July 29, 2002):
[To Piotr Jaworski] A friend of mine played this for me a couple of years ago.
If I remember what he told me accurately, she recorded the whole kit and kaboodle in one sitting, with no retakes.
It was a fascinating and satisfying recording. If no one else on the list can give you the specifics on the set, please let me know and I will ask my friend for the information. |

[To Charlie Ervin McCarn] I will me most obliged! Especially when your friend will let you stay for some time and to listen to this recordings carefully! ;-)
I've recently read very interesting article about Grete Sultan, than several reviews of her recordings followed - my feeling is that her recordings are one of those rare things that Bach lover should not miss... |

I do not read the posts that often, I am embarrassed to admit, or I could have provided this hyperlink sooner.
I have the recording, and I consider it to be one of the many top class recordings of the "Goldbergs".

The Concord Concerto label is pleased to present this 2-CD collection of never-before-released performances (recorded 1959-1990) by the remarkable pianist Grete Sultan. Equally mesmerizing performing both European classical music and modern 20th century compositions, Sultan -- who this year celebrates her 90th birthday -- delivers timeless interpretations of works by Bach, Debussy, Schönberg and John Cage."No artist in the last three quarters of a century symbolizes [the] European - American connection -- the correct word would be something like symbiosis -- better than Grete Sultan." - Eric Salzman, Artistic Director of Music Theater/New York
