Goldberg V.by Ekaterina Dershavina

John Grant wrote (November 27, 2001):
I picked up her Goldberg Variations. (Arts Nova 3480). For 30 years I've always thought Gould's first set were "it." But this playing is unpretentious and, at the same time, extraordinarily gifted. Fabulous. Pure luck. I just picked it up because it was cheap. Now I have a great recording! Does anyone know anything of her? Has she recorded anything else?

Kirk McElhearn wrote (November 27, 2001):
[To John Grant] What a coincidence. Did you just post this out of the blue? At the same time I posted a review of it? [See: Review: Goldberg Variations Ekaterina Dershavina, piano]

I was quite enchanted by her playing. As far as I can find, she has not recorded anything else. I'm looking into it.

John Grant wrote (November 27, 2001):
[To Kirk McElhearn] I'll check the group mail. If you posted a reference to your review, I didn't see it. Just coincedence, I guess. I'll look for the review.

Roy Johansen wrote (November 28, 2001):
[To John Grant] I think the GV is the only recording she has made. There are a few references to her on the net, and it appears she's devoting her time to teaching at a Russian conservatory and giving concerts. Which is our lamentable loss; her GV are extraordinary! (If you want to look her up, be aware that her name is sometimes spelt "Dershawina" on German web pages.)

Another Goldberg Variations

Nessie Russell wrote (November 30, 2003):
This morning I battled the snow and ice to go to the library. I found a recording of the Goldberg Variations which I have seen reviewed (by Kirk) but by a pianist not too many people seem to know - Ekaterina Dershavina.

This recording is fabulous. Dershavina has incredible energy. Some of the faster variations remind me of
Glenn Gould. Great dynamics. I highly recommend this one.

In 1992 she won the first prize at the "International Piano Competition Johann Sebastian Bach" in Saarbrucken. According to the liner notes she is a teacher at the Gnessins-Academy in Moscow.

Kirk McElhearn wrote (November 30, 2003):
[To Nessie Russell] It was a discovery! What energy and creativity, and all that from an unknown pianist at a budget price. I'd highly recommend it.

Again, I ordered a CD of Goldberg Variations by Dershavina, E. I hope I can write something on listning it.

Ekaterina Dershavina

Roy Johansen wrote (August 31, 2004):
I'm probably not the only one who's been looking for other recordings than the "Goldbergs" by Dershavina. As far as I know, that's the only one that's available on CD, but I just found some other of her performances on: http://www.classicalarchives.com/artists/dershavina.html

This is a site that traditionally have focussed on MIDI files, but lately they have expanded into the "real" music realm (streaming and downloadable mp3s). Her performances on this site are live ones, and suffer a bit from
excessive room reverberation (or distant miking), but are still eminently listenable. Available Bach works are the four duets, the French Ouverture, and the Italian variations. In addition, there are also some shorter works by Brahms, and a number of concertos and sonatas by Haydn.

You can listen to streaming versions of the works (5 per day) free of charge, or download the mp3s if you're a paying member ($25 a year). It's well worth checking out!

Why hasn't any record company signed with this woman??!!
