Karl [Carl] Friedrich Barth was a Gernan musician and Kantor. He was born the son of Georg Samuel Barth (businessman in Glauchau) and Christiana Sophia Barth. He attended school in Glauchau and was a pupil of the Kantor Johann Gottlieb Weise. He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 2, 1746; and studied there from 1746 to 17564 or 1757. He was one of J.S. Bach's copyist (1747-1750), known as Anon. N 5. He was the first prefect in the Thomanerchor Leipzig during the tenure of J.S. Bach's successor, Johann Gottlob Harrer, and, after his death in 1755, was appointed interim Thomaskantor, and led the musical performances at St. Thomas and St. Nikolai. He served in this post until January 1756, when Johann Friedrich Doles was appointed Thomaskantor. On June 8, 1757, he enrolled at Universität Leipzig, where he studied theology and philosophy. From 1770 he served as Kantor in Borna. His brother is Christian Samuel Barth. His brothers were also Thomaners: Georg Heinrich Barth (1730-1813) in 1746-1751; Christian Samuel Barth (1735-1809) in c1748-1750.
In his application for the Kantor office in Borna in 1770, Karl Friedrich Barth named J.S. Bach and Johann Gottlob Harrer as his teachers at the Thomasschule, although he did not explicitly mention private lessons. However, since he worked as a copyist for J.S. Bach and particularly emphasized him in a Latin curriculum vitae also submitted in connection with the employment in Borna, he could actually have been a private student.
