Georg Heinrich Barth was born the son of Georg Samuel Barth (businessman in Glauchau). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 2, 1746; studied there from 1746 to 1751; and at Universität Leipzig from 1751. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. After his studies, he worked as substitute from 1755 and Deacon in Frohburg from 1758; Pastor and Superintendent in Gommern near Magdeburg from 1773 to 1811. His younger brothers were also Thomaners: Karl Friedrich Barth (1734-1813) in 1746-1757, as well as interim Thomaskantor (1756-1757); Christian Samuel Barth (1735-1809) in c1748-1750. |
