The American tenor, David Vanderwal, studied at Portland State University in Oregon and Oregon State University in Corvallis. His teachers were: David Jones (New York); Michael Paul (New York), Ruth Dobson (Portland); his coaches were: Neal Goren (New York), Max van Egmond (Amsterdam) and Franco Iglesias (Portland).
David Vanderwal is in high demand for his clarion lyric vocal qualities. The American Bach Soloists, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, Austin Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, New York Collegium, Tafelmusik, Sacred Music for a Sacred Space, as well as many other regional orchestras across the nation have featured him in roles. He has also appeared as featured soloist with many choral societies nationwide. He has also appeared with such groups as Western Wind (New York: 1998, 2002), The Four Nations Ensemble, The Waverly Consort (New York: 2000), New York Ensemble for Early Music (2003), the Folger Consort (Washington, DC: 2003), St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue (New York: 1998-2003), New York Collegium (New York: 1999-2002).
In recent seasons David Vanderwal has been busy with performances of J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) with the American Bach Soloists in San Francisco, and George Frideric Handel's Messiah with the Concert Royale and the St. Thomas Church Choir in New York. He performed J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245), and G.F. Handel's Israel in Egypt with the New York Collegium under Andrew Parrott, and made solo appearances in concerts of Charpentier and Dvořák with the Choral Arts Society of Westchester, and the Westchester Chorale, respectively. He also performed W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass with the Norristown Chorale in Pennsylvania and sang several performances under Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene. Recent performances have also included G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Masterwork Chorale in Carnegie Hall, New York, Igor Stravinsky's Les Noces with the Cornell University Chorus, W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Fairfield County Chorale, and a set of song recitals.
During this last year (2008) David Vanderwal has been busy with performances of G.F. Handel’s Messiah with the St. Paul’s Cathedral Choirs of Buffalo, New York., Pax Christi of Toronto, ON., Danbury (Connecticut) Symphony Orchestra, the Mendelssohn Choir (Connecticut), and First Congregational Church of Greenwich, Connecticut. He performed J.S. Bach's Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), and a new concert Mass of John Tavener with the Choir of St. Thomas Church, in New York. He has also been appearing with such groups as Tiffany Consort, Clarion, Concert Royale, Four Nations Ensemble, Waverly Consort, Early Music New York, Vox, the Folger Consort, and has been very busy with New York’s St. Thomas Church throughout the year.
David Vanderwal has recorded under the Allegro, Delos, Pro Musica Gloriae, and Koch International record labels, and with Western Wind of New York on their own label. He has also won several awards in national and local vocal competitions.
Now based in New York City, David Vanderwal will be Singing at the Carmel Bach Festival in California, and will be teaching and coaching at the International Bachakademie’s Stuttgart Festival in Überlingen, Germany. He is also presenting a set of song recitals through the year. |
