The German organist, composer, church music director (KMD) and music pedagogue, Gisbert Schneider, was born in Wattenscheid and grew up in Weimar. There he received his first organ lessons with Johannes-Ernst Köhler. The church music and conducting he studied with Siegfried Reda at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. He won international organ competitions and in 1958 was awarded the Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia.
After finishing his studies, Gisbert Schneider served as a church musician, included in Velbert and Mülheim an der Ruhr. Since 1963 he taught artistic organ playing and improvisation at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen; in 1970, he was appointed Professor. He is now is a professor emeritus. Among his pupils are the composer Herbert Callhoff and the choral conductor/organist Carsten Zündorf.
In addition to his international concert career as an organist, Gisbert Schneider was a jury member at international organ competitions. He had a particularly close cooperation with the Krakow Academy of Music and Jan Jargon. In 1954, he founded the Kantorei Velbert and was its director for more than 50 years. In 2007, he was succeed by Frank Schreiber. In 1996, he was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz verliehen (Federal Cross of Merit).
