The German organist, Günter Metz, received initially organ tuition from Werner Tell; then went on to study with Günther Ramin at the Leipzig Musikhochschule. Even while still studying, he stood in for organists at the Thomaskirche.
From 1946 to 1948 Günter Metz was organist at the Friedenskirche in Leipzig, from 1948 to 1988 at the Marienkirche in Zwickau.
A much sought-after organ virtuoso, Günter Metz performed publicly from 1963 onwards in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary, and from 1978 in the Federal Republic of Germany as well. He earned great respect as organ advisor in connection with the re-creation of organ culture and organ-building in Saxony after World War II. One of the highlights of this work was the organ erected in the Marienkirche in Zwickau by the organ-building firm Eule of Bautzen. |
