Stephan Loges (Bass)

Born: 1972 - Dresden, Germany

The German bass, Stephan Loges, was a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor before going on to study at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. In 1995 he began studies with Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, completing the opera course in June 1999.

Stephan Loges made his Carnegie Hall début in the Johannes Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem under Helmuth Rilling. He has also appeared with Jane Glover in the USA singing Haydn’s Nelson Mass. In the UK, he was a soloist in a concert of Bach Cantatas under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, which was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon and he has subsequently been invited back to take part in J.E. Gardiner’s Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. He has recently taken part in a tour Spain with Philippe Herreweghe and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées singing Felix Mendelssohn’s Paulus; sang J. Brahms Requiem with the Ulster Orchestra and the St John Passion (BWV 245) with the Orchestra of the Enlightenment under Stephen Layton and J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass (BWV 232) with both RIAS Kammerchor and Marcus Creed and the Corydon Orchestra and Matthew Best.

Stephan Loges’ extensive Lieder repertory includes Schubert’s Schwanengesang, which he has performed with Roger Vignoles, Schubert’s Winterreise and J. BrahmsDie schöne Magelone. He appears regularly with Graham Johnson, most recently at the Klavierfestival Ruhr in Germany and the Wigmore Hall, and made his New York début at the 92nd St Y with Alexander Schmalcz and made his recital début in Lucerne.

Stephan Loges's His operatic roles at the Guildhall School have included Sid Albert Herring, The Lodger in Argento’s The Aspern Papers, The Devil in Tchaikovsky’s Cherevichki and Eumée in Gabriel Fauré’s Pénélope. He has also taken part in scenes from Billy Budd (Billy Budd), Lucia di Lammermoor (Enrico), Le Nozze di Figaro (Figaro), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni) and Die Zauberflöte (Papageno). Last summer he covered the role of Mountjoy in Opera North’s production of B. Britten’s Gloriana and the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro for Scottish Opera in the Autumn and most recently took part in performances of Ariadne auf Naxos with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. Future engagements include Le Nozze di Figaro (the Count) for Opera North.

Stephan Loges has taken part in recitals with Iain Burnside as part of his Century Songs project and later this year in a Young Concert Artists recital tour of the USA, including a recital as part of the highly respected Vocal Arts Series in Washington. For Hyperion, he has recorded with Graham Johnson as part of their Robert Schumann and Schubert series, and with Eugene Asti as part of their F. Mendelssohn series.

In concert he recently sang Christus and arias with Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort in both J.S. Bach Passions (BWV 244 & BWV 245) in France and Christus in St. John Passion (BWV 245) with the Irish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Stephen Layton. Forthcoming concert plans include Messiah under Paul McCreesh with both the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. In 2001 he will appear at the Philharmonie in Munich with the Münchener Bach-Chor and Orchestra under Hanns-Martin Schneidt and at the Semper Oper Dresden performing Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten conducted by Peter Schreier.
