Guido Groenland (Tenor)

Born: April 22, ____ - Breda, the Netherlands

The Dutch tenor, Guido Groenland,, began singing as a boy soprano in the Sacramentskoor of Breda. He studied at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Breda (Class of 1996). He studied singing and opera at the Koninklijk Conservatorium (Royal Conservatoire) in The Hague, and at the Conservatory of Maastricht. In addition to studies with Rebecca Stewart, he focused on music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and he attended master-classes in Baroque singing with Jill Feldman, Harry van der Kamp and Peter Harvey.

Guido Groenland's repertoire stretches from the Middle Ages to the present, with a love for music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. As a soloist, he sang W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, Heinrich Schütz' 'Musikalische Exequien, Igor Stravinsky's In Memoriam Dylan Thomas and Benjamin Britten's The Company of Heaven and A Wedding Anthem . He sang arias in many cantatas, B Minor Mass (BWV 232) and Magnificat (BWV 243) by J.S. Bach, and was Evangelist in his Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), the apocryphal Lukas-Passion (BWV 246) and Markus-Passion (BWV 247) in the reconstruction by Ton Koopman. His bright timbre and natural rhetoric make him an excellent storyteller in this repertoire. With Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, he was soloist in cantatas by J.S. Bach and works by Charpentier: Te Deum, Messe de Minuit and several oratorios, including Mors et Saulis Jonathae (David).

In the opera field, Guido Groenland performed the role of Mercure in Les Fêtes d'Hébé by Rameau, Monostatos in Flemish children's production of W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Humpback Player in Prokofiev's The Player (Opera Zuid) and Testo in Monteverdi's Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Furthermore, he gives recitals with Lieder by Schubert (Die Schöne Müllerin), Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, Benjamin Britten, Weill and in his programmes.

As an ensemble singer Guido Groenland works including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir (Director: Ton Koopman), with Cappella Amsterdam (Director: Daniel Reuss) and De Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven). He sings and he has sung leading conductors such as Ton Koopman, Frans Brüggen, Daniel Reuss, Andrew Parrott, Gustav Leonhardt and Jos van Veldhoven.

Guido Groenland is also active as ensemble leader. With his ensemble Quadrivium he gives performances of music from Renaissance and Baroque, from motets by Josquin to J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). In Breda he directed the Herman Hollanders Consort, and the project choir Rosette in Rotterdam, he was invited in 2015 to a programme of Franco-Flemish polyphony, which he was asked back for a project on the Venetian Baroque in 2016.
