The Swedish counter-tenor, Daniel Carlsson, studied singing at Vadstena Folkhögskola in Vadstena and at Rönneskolan i Ängelholm (Class of 1999). He studied at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium (DKDM; the Royal Danish Academy) in Copenhagen in 2002 as a tenor and graduated in 2008. During the course of his studies he decided to change his voice from tenor to counter-tenor strongly encouraged by Baroque specialists such as Jacob Lorentzen and Jill Feldman. He received his singing education from Margrethe Enevold, Bodil Gümoes and Tony Landy and has concurrently attended master-classes with Roger Vignoles, Martin Isepp and Jill Feldman, Paul Esswood and Richard Levitt, who was Andreas Scholl's teacher for many years. among others.
Since Daniel Carlsson began singing counter-tenor in 2007, he has been much in demand as a soloist both in Denmark and Sweden. He has appeared as soloist in J.S. Bach cantatas with Trinitatis Kantori and the conductor Per Enevold, in J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and in Jan Dismas Zelenka's Lamentations both in Holmen's Church with conductor Jacob Lorentzen.
In 2008 Daniel Carlsson also appeared as soloist with Holmen's Cantory in Charpentier's Messe de Morts at Cuenca Baroque Festival in Spain. Later that year he sang Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in Oslo and J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Sweden as well as J.S. Bach's B-minor Mass (BWV 232) with Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra in February 2009. 2009 started with a duet concert with Baroque soprano Anna Jobrant Dalnäs at The Royal Naval Church in Copenhagen, Denmark. Other engagements include the role of Amor in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea at Drottningholm Cuort Theatre.
Daniel Carlsson has worked with conductors like Stephen Layton, Philip Pickett, Mark Tatlow, Olof Boman, Joakim Unander, Benjamin Bayl and Simon Phipps. Other collaborations on a regular basis includes projects with the composer and artist Line Törnhöj. He performed her new piece Portrait in the Danish Radio in spring 2013.
Recent engagements include J.S. Bach's 's Messiah and J.S. Bach's B-minor Mass (BWV 232) with South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, Charpentier's Messe de Morts in the Cuenca Baroque Festival. In 2009 Daniel Carlsson sang Amor in L'incoronazione di Poppea at Drottningholm Slottsteater, Stockholm. In the Musikfestival Sanssouci in Potsdam, 2010 he sang Nearco in Calandro. The following year he again participated in L'incoronazione di Poppea but in a new role: Nero. Folkoperan in Stockholm Sweden invited Daniel to sing Tolemaios in Giulio Cesare in 2013. Other engagements include Farman in the new opera Falling Awake by Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki in the ILT Festival, Aarhus, Oberon in Midsummer Night's Dream at Läckö Slott, Sweden. In 2013-2014 Daniel participated in a staged version of Benjamin Britten's Canticle II Abraham and Isaac at the Gothenburg Opera. In 2014-2015 season, he has been soloist in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) with Odense Symphony Orchestra, Denmark and he is engaged by the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir as soloist in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Stockholm Concert Hall. He had a main role in Moto Osada's new opera The Son of Heaven at Vadstena, Sweden in summer 2015.
