Since its foundation in 1992, the vocal and instrumental ensemble La Capilla Real de Madrid has developed significant work in the field of the performance of Historic Music, their work enjoying wide international recognition.
The staging of Dido and Aeneas by Purcell in the Festival de Almagro 1995 won it the Premio Ágora awarded by the critics thanks to the Musical-Theatrical Contribution. Since then, the opera productions played an important role in its programme, staging works such as Acis and Galatea (George Frideric Handel), The Fairy Queen (Purcell), Orfeo ed Euridice (Glück), Le malade imaginaire (Molière-Charpentier), and in concert version the Baroque zarzuela Iphigenia en Tracia (José de Nebra) and the opera Farnace (Francesco Corselli).
Its concert activity has included universal musical literature. Worthy of mention are series dedicated to Monteverdi (Selva Morale e Spirituale, Vespro della Beata Vergine, Madrigales), Purcell (Odas, Anthems), G.F. Handel (Judas Maccabaeus, Messiah, Alexander’s Feast, Ode for St Cecilia’s Day…), J.S. Bach (Messe in h-Moll BWV 232, Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248, Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Matthäus-Passion BWV 244), Mozart (Requiem) and Haydn (Die Schöpfung).
With respect to the recovery of Spanish history heritage, La Capilla Real de Madrid has revived a number of works, most of them unedited, significant pieces located in the Archivos del Palacio Real de Madrid, the Monasterio de Guadalupe en Extremadura and the Monasterio de la Encarnación de Madrid. As a result of these studies, they have recorded several works and have been the guest in different festivals and institutions, like the Semana de Música Religiosa de Cuenca, Ciclos del Patrimonio Nacional, the Festival Internacional de Jaén and the Fundación Complutense-ICCMU.
Throughout its existence, it has been present on the most important national stages, like the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Auditorio Nacional en Madrid, the Festival de Teatro Clásico de Mérida, the Festival de Teatro Clásico de Almagro, the Palacio Real de Madrid, the Palau de la Música Catalana de Barcelona, the Auditorio Príncipe de Asturias de Oviedo, the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza, the Festival de Ópera de Sevilla, the Festival Internacional de Órgano de León, the Sociedad Filarmónica de Bilbao, and Royal Places like the Monasterio de El Escorial, the Monasterio de Yuste or the Palacio de El Pardo.
As J.S. Bach is a main composer in the activity of La Capilla Real de Madrid, in the 1999-2000 season, it performed, under the sponsorship of the Madrid Region, a series of concerts dedicated to the Maestro Kantor commemorating his 250th anniversary. The Madrid Town Hall, recognising its work, entrusted it as the guest ensemble and programmer of the series Las Cantatas de Bach, which since 2004 has been covering the entire performance thereof. In this monumental project, more than seventy of these works have been performed until 2011. Likewise, and under the baton of Óscar Gershensohn, La Capilla Real de Madrid has shared programmes with different ensembles: Hippocampus, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Orquesta Barroca de la Universidad de Salamanca, Vespres d’Arnadí, Estil Concertant, Ars Combinatoria, Los Músicos del Buen Retiro and Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana. In turn it has counted with Richard Egarr and Gustav Leonhardt as guest conductors.
Its extensive international activity has taken it on tours through different capitals of Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay. Likewise, it has been invited by The Abu Gosh Vocal Festival of Israel, the Ludwigsburg Festspiele of Germany, the Jubilee Festival in Rome, the International Music Festival of Naples or the Festival d’Art Sacré of Paris, to mention but a few. |
