Hippocampus (Early Music Ensemble)

Founded: 2000 - Madrid, Spain

In July 2000, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the death of J.S. Bach , Hippocampus was born in London offering a tribute concert. Since then, their relationship with this repertoire has been very close: its most important projects include the participation as a resident group in the current Music Series at the churches of Madrid, cycle which addresses since 2004 the performance of the complete cantatas of J.S. Bach.

Hippocampus is an anemble formed by soloists specializing in the interpretation of the music of the 16th to 18th centuries, all of whom studied with renowned teachers, and many began to make music together when they were students. With a variable size depending on the repertoire performed, Hippocampus has performed at various festivals in England (2000 St Anne’s Bach Festival, 2002 St. Ceciliatide London International Festival of Music, 2002 Fenton House Concerts), and in various German cities (Klangbilder Festival - Alte Musik im Kulturforum Berlin, Alte Musik aus Spanien at the Cervantes Institute in Munich, Passau ... ) and Spanish cities (Santander, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Huesca, Sevilla, Cádiz, Santiago de Compostela, Madrid, Ibiza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria... ) , participating in major series and festivals .

In April 2005 Hippocampus performed the Six Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-1051) by J.S. Bach at the Auditorio del Centro Cultural Conde Duque. The ensemble has been directed repeatedly by the master Richard Egarr, music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, and has performed concerts of Bach Cantatas with the participation of guest soloist Christophe Coin. Hippocampus repertoire has four orchestral suites and concertos for solo instruments by J.S. Bach, as well as more than 50 cantatas .

Hippocampus has recorded four CD’s with Arsis label: the Op. 2 of Johann Philipp Krieger (4 * Goldberg, world premiere recording of the the complete trio sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord), " Les Goûts réunis", with violinist Jaap Schröder, music by Georg Philipp Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and J.S. Bach, "Lasciatemi morire" , with music by G. Caccini, Girolamo Frescobaldi and C. Monteverdi and a CD with live Interpetación three Bach Cantatas (BWV 82, BWV 170 and BWV 199), recorded in August 2008 during a concert tour in Spain
