German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

Valet will ich dir geben
Du arge, falsche Welt;
Dein sündlich böses Leben
Durchaus mir nicht gefällt.
Im Himmel ist gut wohnen,
Hinauf zieht mein Begier;
Da wird Gott herrlich lohnen
Dem, der ihm dient allhier.

I want to bid you farewell,
You evil, false world
Your sinful, wicked life
It is not all pleasing to me.
In heaven it is good to dwell,
My longing is set on what is above
There God will reward forever
The person who serve him here.

2

Rat mir nach deinem Herzen,
O Jesu, Gottes Sohn!
Soll ich ja dulden Schmerzen,
Hilf mir, Herr Christ, davon.
Verkürz mir alles Leiden
Stärk meinen blöden Mut;
Laß selig mich abscheiden
Setz mich in dein Erbgut.

Advise me according to your heart
Oh Jesus, Son of God
If I must here suffer pain
help me, Lord Christ in this
Shorten for me all suffering
Strengthen my foolish spirit
Let me depart in blessedness
Place me in your house.

3

In meines Herzen Grunde
Dein Nam und Kreuz allein
Funkelt all Zeit und Stunde,
Drauf kann ich fröhlich sein.
Erschein mir in dem Bilde
Zum Trost in meiner Not,
Wie du, Herr Christ, so milde
Dich hast geblut't zu Tod.

In the depths of my heart
Your name and cross
Shine at all seasons and hours
so that in this I am able to be joyful
Appear to me in your image
for consolation in my distress
as you , Christ my lord, so gently
bled to death.

4

Verbirg mein Seel aus Gnaden
In deiner offnen Seit,
Rück sie aus allem Schaden
Zu deiner Herrlichkeit;
Der ist wohl hier gewesen,
Und kommt ins Himmels Schloß;
Der ist ewig genesen,
Wer bleibt in deinem Schoß.

By your grace conceal my soul
In your open side,
Move it away from alll harm
To your glory!
Here my soul is well,
enters into Heavens palace
recovers for ever,
remains in your bosom.

5

Schreib meinen Nam aufs Beste
Ins Buch des Lebens ein
Und bind mein Seel fein feste
Ins schöne Bündelein
Der'r, die im Himmel grünen
Und vor dir leben frei,
So will ich ewig rühmen,
Daß dein Herz treue sei.

Best of all write my name
In the book of life
and bind my soul really firmly
in the beautiful dear company
of those who blossom in heaven
and live freely in your presence,
Then I shall eternally praise
The faithfulness of your heart.
