Work Group B: Sacred Works for Special Occasions |
Group Description |
Work Group B consists of sacred works (principally cantatas) for special occasions outside of the Sundays and feast days of the liturgical year (annual cycles of cantatas → Work Group A). The compositions in this work group are organized primarily according to their known or probable function. Within each of these categories, the works are arranged chronologically, whenever possible.
According to the available evidence concerning his estate (Obituary, Dok IIIl, p.86; Bach Reader, p.221), Bach is reported to have left behind »many works for burial services and for wedding Masses...« This vague account mentions only two of the many kinds of occasions for which appropriate sacred music would have been required. Others include occasions of state (Election of the Town Council → B 3 - B 10, Jubilee → B 27 - B 29) and events calling for specific commissions (→ B l - B 2, B 11 - B 23, B 30 -B 32, perhaps also B 24 - B 26). It is difficult to say what the extent of our losses are in this repertoire: the works that have survived extend from the Mühlhausen period, from 1707 at the latest (→ B 1, B 25), into the last Leipzig years (→ B 26, arrangement of another composer's work).
In contrast to the cantata cycles, the compositions in Work Group B do not belong to a unified musical genre. The spectrum ranges from »state music« of an oratorio-like character (→ B 21 - B 22) to simple chorale-like compositions (→ B 17); in one case (→ B 23a/b) it borders on the motet (→ Work Group C, funeral motets). |
