They get remarkably faster in releasing the Cantatas, the last volume having been released by the end of January!
Here is what BIS wrote:
"BIS-CD-1251 Bach Cantatas Vol. 18 7318590012512 TT 69'43
J.S. Bach: Cantata No.66, 'Erfreut euch, ihr Herzen', BWV 66; Cantata No.134, 'Ein Herz, das seinen Jesum lebend weiß', BWV 134; Cantata No.67, 'Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ', BWV 67.
Bach Collegium Japan directed by Masaaki Suzuki; Robin Blaze, counter-tenor;
Makoto Sakurada, tenor; Peter Kooij, bass.
This is volume XVIII (18) of Masaaki Suzuki's cycle of Bach cantatas performed by the Bach Collegium Japan with the usual line-up of distinguished soloists. The cantata cycle has won itself a wide following of serious collectors who snap up each new issue as it arrives. The present disc is a particularly good starting point for people not committed to the entire series because it contains three very joyful cantatas written for the period after Easter and celebrating the risen Lord. And for those who like natural trumpet equilibristics there is some remarkable playing by Toshio Shimada. The series is of course self-recommending - but for those who needs to be convinced here are some of the reactions to the latest volumes:
"Volume 15 [BIS-CD-1111] have afforded me more pleasure than any other release I've yet reviewed in this glorious series." (International Record Review April 2002) and ". volume 15 est une merveille d'intélligence, de sensibilité et de style." (Le Monde de la Musique - who picked it as "Choc du Mois" of February 2002. As for Volume 16 (BIS-CD-1131) it was chosen as one of the top ten releases in January by Répértoire whose critic named it "Un grand disque d'une integrale exceptionelle." (Répértoire, January 2002)" |

[To Marten Breuer] Speaking of Suzuki, my brochure for the 2002-2003 season at Carnegie Hall just arrived and shows Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan doing the SMP there next April. He will be using a New York choral group, and Peter Kooy is among the soloists. I assume Suzuki's manager will book him elsewhere in the US around that time.
