We have the latest vol. of Suzuki's labour of love in the UK now, and I received my copy last week through MDT: http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product/NR_January06/BISSACD1461.htm
Vol 29 is as mellifluous as the previous 28 and I'm still convinced that Suzuki's care and precision works as a reference for other contemporary performances. In a week or so we will have the version recorded by Gardiner of BWV3 as a comparison. It will be especially interesting to see how much more Gardiner can squeeze emotionally out
of the 5th movement - the lovely duet for Alto and Soprano (here sung by Dorothee Mields in her first recording for BCJ Cantatas.)
Recently I stumbled across Jessica Duchen's blog: http://jessicamusic.blogspot.com/
where she fumes about the recent BBC's 'Bok' festival and the Suzuki rendition of a Brandenburg concerto. Her piece is quite funny and can be found under "Is there something wrong with me?" |
