Melody & Text: Zahn: 8032 | EKG: 293

Melody:

This melody by Johann Crüger appeared for the first time in Crüger’s Praxis pietatls melica (4th Edition) Berlin, 1653.

With the sole exception of BWV 87/7, where Bach used instead the 9th verse of Heinrich Müller’s (1659) chorale text Selig ist die Seele, all Bach’s settings of this melody use or make reference to Johann Franck’s chorale text Jesu, meine Freude from 1650.

Text 1: Jesu, meine Freude | EKG: 293
Author: Johann Franck (1650)

Text 2: Selig ist die Seele | EKG:
Author: Heinrich Müller (1659)

Early sources of the chorale melody:

The appearance of the melody originally looked like this as presented by Johann Crüger in 1653:

A hymnal source closer to Bach’s time and one which he may have had access to is the Gotha Hymnal from 1715. There the melody appears as follows:

J.S. Bach (Spurious): [based upon the NBA KB IV/10 (2008)]
Jesu, meine Freude, Chorale Prelude for Organ, BWV Anh 58 [Emans Nr. 118]
A thorough discussion regarding the authenticity of this chorale prelude has not yet taken place; however, based upon the existing copies, there still is no really good reason to doubt the authenticity of this work.

Jesu, meine Freude, Chorale Prelude for Organ, BWV Anh 59 [Emans Nr. 119]
Although the transmission of this composition has not removed all doubts about its authenticity, Bach’s authorship could not be contradicted by a careful investigation and scrutiny of all of the evidence provided by the various original sources. Stylistically there is evidence of musical features which are unlike Bach. There is also a possibility that the interludes within this piece were added by another composer, but even the basic 3-part structure of the chorale does not completely resemble our present-day understanding of Bach’s music. The NBA has refrained from including it among the printed, authenticated versions of Bach’s organ works.
