Melody & Text: Zahn: 4373 | EKG: 391

Text:

Text: Jakob Ebert (1549-1615) 7 verses, born 1549 in Sprottau in Silesia, a professor of theology at the University of Frankfurt (on the Oder).

Melody:

Composer unknown.

This melody, once thought to be by Ludwig Helmbold but now no longer so, is found in a collection by Bartholomäus Gesius (Gese) (1601) and is loosely based upon “Innsbruck, ich muß dich lassen” which appeared as: ”Geistliche deutsche Lieder", Frankfurt an der Oder, 1601. Here is the melody as given in a 17th century hymnal with a comparison to the incipit of Heinrich Isaac’s melody for “Innsbruck, ich muß dich lassen”.
