Christine Wolff (Soprano)

Born: Germany

The German soprano, Christine Wolff, studied with Kammersängerin Sigrid Kehl at the Leipzig Musikhochschule. Currently her singing coach is Professor Venceslava Hruba-Freiberger. In 2000 she received the Second Prize from the Council of German Concert Choirs (First Prize was not awarded).

Christine Wolff began her career as a member of the ensemble at the opera theatres in Chemnitz and Dessau. Since then she has made guest appearances at the opera houses of Leipzig, Schwerin and Halle, at the Staatsoper Berlin and the Staatstheater Gärtnerplatz München, where she has performed numerous lyric soprano roles. She has developed a high-profile concert career as well, with hundreds of performances and an extensive repertoire.

Stylistic precision and technical perfection of her voice allow Christine Wolff to feel at home not only in standard concert repertoire, such as Passions and Oratorios, but also to perform classical modern works (War Requiem, Golgotha, Jeanne d’Arc, Carmina Burana), as well as the period music with Musica Antiqua Köln and the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam.

As a guest artist, Christine Wolff has been invited to sing opera and operetta roles in theatres throughout Germany (Eurydice, Musetta, Rosina, Konstanze among others). Success and great acclaim brought her the role of Maria in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. She went on to sing it in ten different productions in Berlin (Metropoltheater, now Admiralspalast), and later in Munich, Leipzig, Halle and Schwerin.

As her career evolved, concert and opera engagements have taken Christine Wolff around the world. Recent invitations include Amsterdam, Basel, Innsbruck, Vienna, Gran Canaria, Paris, Utrecht, Milan, Lisbon, Budapest, Barcelona, Pennsylvania, Sofia, Korfu, Porto. She has sung with renowned orchestras and choirs such as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Dresdner Kapellsolisten, La Cetra Basel, Thomanerchor Leipzig, Windsbacher Knabenchor, Dresdner Kreuzchor, under the baton of Kurt Masur, Peter Schreier, M. Jurowski, J.P. Weigle, Hans-Christoph Rademann, M. Tardue, Hermann Max, Georg Christoph Biller and Reinhard Goebel. She has been a guest at many prestigious festivals: Händelfestspiele Halle, Internationale Bachfeste Leipzig, Hamburg, Schlossfestspiele Ludwigsburg, Festivals für Alte Musik Innsbruck, Melk, Utrecht, Herne, Telemannfesttage Magdeburg, Brandenburgische Sommerkonzerte, Internationale Sofioter Festwochen, MDR-Musiksommer. She regularly performs with Germany’s leading concert and church choirs.

Musicality coupled with profound depth of artistry makes Christine Wolff a sought-after interpreter of contemporary music, for example in the first performance of Luca Lombardi’s Dmitri (Opera Leipzig), or as Miss Havisham in the opera of the same title for a Soprano solo by Dominick Argento (USA).

Her recordings range from Baroque and Classical through to contemporary music, they include complete opera recordings, songs by the lesser-known Romantic composers and Spanish songs by Joaquin Rodrigo.

Christine Wolff enjoys passing her knowledge and experience to students in masterclasses and as a lecturer at the University of Halle.
