Gerard de Wit (Organ, Harpsichord, Conductor)

Born: February 5, 1985 - Dordrecht, the Netherland

The Dutch organist, harpsichordist, conductor and composer, Gerard de Wit, studied singing and choir conducting during the 2006-2007 season at the IDE-College in Gorinchem, Holland. He studied organ as main subject at the Rotterdam Conservatory and received his Bachelor’s Degree (DM) in June 2010. He studied there for his main subject with Bas de Vroome and Bernard Winsemius as his teachers. With these two teachers he also studied for his minor degree in Basso Continuo. At the Royal Conservatory in The Hague he studied his main subject harpsichord with Ton Koopman and Tini Mathot. In May 2011, he received his Bachelor’s Degree. He finished his Master Study harpsichord at the Royal Conservatory and received a 9 as final grade. During his studies he published his research: "J.P Sweelinck and his instrumental music" He also researched J.S. Bach’s incomplete Cantata BWV 188. From this cantata he reconstructed the Symphony on the basis of the Harpsichord concerto BWV 1052. During his final examination this Harpsichord concerto was performed. He took part in several master-classes under, amongst others: Jan Hage, Lutger Lohman and Thomas Trotter. He studied Basso Continuo with Patrick Ayrton and Kathryn Cok. He also studied Historical Documentation with Peter van Heyghen and Ton Koopman’s Capita Selecta at Leyden University. In 2003 Gerard won the first prize as well as the prize awarded by the public at a composition competition.

Gerard de Wit regularly publishes choir- and organ scores. In 2011 he issued a CD with choral scores, completed with vocal scores, volume 2 of this CD to be issued in October 2013. He is the founder and the artistic leader of a chamber choir called Camerate Musicale. This choir aims at programming well-known and especially lesser known music from the 16th up to and including the 18th century. As player of the church organ he is committed to the organ of the Old Church in Zwijndrecht.
