The American bass-baritone and conductor, Donald Wilkinson, is enjoying a distinguished career in concert, opera, oratorio, recital and contemporary music. He has appeared throughout the USA and Canada. He recently made his European debut performing the role of Dionysos in the World première of Theodore Antoniou's opera The Bachhae at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Recent seasons have included the New York and Boston premières of Viktor Ullmann's opera The Emperor of Atlantis and a USA tour of J.S. Bach's Missa Brevis in G Minor (BWV 235) with Christopher Hogwood and the Handel and Haydn Society. The New York Times praised him for "outstanding solo work". In the summer of 1996 he was featured in J.S. Bach's Missa Brevis in G Minor (BWV 235) and J.S. Bach's Peasant Cantata (BWV 212) at the Carmel Bach Festival. He can be heard with Emmanuel Music on Koch International Classics and will be featured on two upcoming releases on Erato Disques; Kurt Weill's Johnny Johnson (in the title role) and Angels with the Boston Camerata (released April 1997).
Donald Wilkinson has appeared with the symphony orchestras of Boston, Pittsburg, Jacksonville, Springfield, Portland (ME), and Vermont, the Carmel Bach Festival, the Bach Festival of Philadelphia, Boston Baroque, Boston Cecilia, the Washington Bach Consort, and the Boston Camerata. On the opera stage, he has sung the roles of Marcello in La Bohème, Belcore in L'Elisir d'amore, Germont in La Traviata, Allazim in Zaide, Sam in Trouble in Tahiti, and Konecny in the American première of Janácek's Fate. Since 1984, he has been a regular soloist in Emmanuel Music of Boston's famed Emmanuel Music: Bach Cantata Series and has participated in three recordings of Heinrich Schütz motets for the Koch International Classics label. In 1990, he was awarded a fellowship at Tanglewood. |
