The Dutch soprano, Marieke Steenhoek, graduated from the conservatory of Amsterdam in 2004. She studied with Maarten Koningsberger and Margreet Honig and in addition to her studies there, she took lessons with Jard van Nes, Valérie Guillorit and Noelle Barker. She currently receives vocal coaching from Gemma Visser. She participated in the maste-rclass “Acting for Singers” at the Jekerstudio (theatreschool Maastricht) and received lessons from Yolande Bertsch, Helmert Woudenberg en Roland Velte a.o. In September 2006, she won the 1st prize at the Deutekom Concours, as well as the audience prize offered by the “Friends of the National Travelling Opera”
In October 2008, Marieke Steenhoek made her debut as a soloist with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam in the Nielsen-symphony conducted by Herbert Blomstedt. Fall 2007 she made her debut as a soloist with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir conducted by Ton Koopman. Earlier that year, she sang as a soloist with The Nederlandse Bachvereniging performing a première of Ernst Graf’s Der Tod Jesu conducted by Jos van Veldhoven. From 2000 she is a member of the Arion Ensemble under the direction of Chris Pouw. This ensemble toured a.o. France, Italy and Slovenia. She has sung Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn, Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) by J.S. Bach, Carmina Burana by C. Orff, Stabat Mater by J. Haydn) and Litaniae by W.A. Mozart
In 2010, Marieke Steenhoek made her debut at The Dutch Opera in a world premiere of A Dogs Heart by Alexander Raskatov and early 2011 she sang the role of first Angel in De Legende by Peter Jan Wagemans. Also, she sang the role of Estelle in The Stronger by H. Weisgall), Dorothea in the Baroque-opera Don Chisciotte by Conti, Pat Nixon in the opera Nixon in China by John Adams, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart and the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus by J.Strauss under the baton of J. van Maanen with AUKSO Extended Chamber Orchestra from Katowice (Poland). Other roles: Geraldine A Hand of Bridge by Samuel Barber, Ingrate in Un ballo dell´ Ingrata by C. Monteverdi and Laurey in Oklahoma by R. Rodgers and O. Hammerstein.
Besides opera and oratorio Marieke Steenhoek is frequently heard in the modern repertoire. She sang several soprano solos including the world premiere of and Nothing Death by Carlos Michans, pli selon pli by Pierre Boulez with the Doelenensemble and Trois Poésies de la Lyrique Japonaise by Igor Stravinsky. |
