The Portuguese conductor and pianist, Dinis Sousa, studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he was the Conducting Fellow, during which period he had the opportunity to prepare the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra for Bernard Haitink as well as conducting several different projects, including J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) at Milton Court Concert Hall and a staged production of Harrison Birtwistle's Down by the Greenwood Side at the Silk Street Theatre. At Guildhall, he studied conducting with Sian Edwards and Timothy Redmond and piano with Philip Jenkins and Martin Roscoe. He has also taken part in several master-classes, working with Sequeira Costa, Angela Hewitt, Richard Egarr, Ralf Gothóni, Jean-Sébastien Béreau, amongst others.
Now based in London, Dinis Sousa is founder and artistic director of Orquestra XXI, an award-winning orchestra bringing together some of the best young Portuguese musicians living abroad. The orchestra has already established itself as one of the leading performing groups in Portugal, appearing regularly in all the major concert halls to critical acclaim.
Since 2013, Dinis Sousa has worked with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and has been his assistant on projects with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker and with his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique and Monteverdi Choir at the BBC Proms.
As a guest conductor, this season (2015-2016) Dinis Sousa conducts the Southbank Sinfonia, Orquestra Clássica da Madeira and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra for its Festival ao Largo 2016, with a Shakespeare focussed programme with works by Tchaikovsky, Charles Gounod and Prokofiev. Other highlights include opening the Gulbenkian Foundation Season and appearing at Centro Cultural de Belém’s festival “Dias da Música” for a televised concert. |
