Sian Edwards (Conductor)

Born: 1959 - England

The English conductor, Sian Edwards, graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music, and from 1983 to 1985 was a student of Professor A.I. Musin at the Leningrad Conservatoire and it was during this time, in May 1984, that she won the first Leeds Conductors' Competition.

Sian Edwards has worked with many of Britain's leading orchestras including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Mozart Players, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, and made her BBC Prom debut in 1993.

Orchestral engagements abroad have included concerts in the USA with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and Detroit Symphony Orcherstra. Engagements have also included a nationwide tour of Australia for the ABC and concerts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the Sydney Festival, concerts with the Orchestre de Paris, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Resonanz in Köln, HR-Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt), Schoenberg Ensemble, an extensive tour with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie (including Berlin, Cologne and Vienna), SWF-Sinfonieorchester, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, and Berliner Symphoniker.

Sian Edwards made her operatic debut in 1986 conducting Weill's Mahagonny for Scottish Opera, and her ROH debut in 1988 with Tippett's The Knot Garden. From 1993 to 1995 she was Music Director of ENO for whom her repertoire included Khovanshchina, Jenufa, Queen of Spades and Blond Eckbert (also recorded on Collins). For the Glyndebourne Festival she has conducted La Traviata and the Ravel Double Bill, and for Glyndebourne Touring Opera Katya Kabanova and Tippett's New Year. She conducted the world premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s Greek at the Munich Biennale in 1988. Recent engagements have included the world premiere of Hans Gefors' Clara for the Opéra Comique in Paris, Cosi fan tutte in Aspen, her return to ENO for Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni in Copenhagen, Damnation de Faust in Helsinki and Peter Grimes in Frankfurt.

Sian Edwards' recording for EMI of Tchaikovsky orchestral music with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra received the highest critical acclaim as did further EMI recordings of: Peter and the Wolf, Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide, and Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony, all with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Sian Edwards' acclaimed performance of Judith Weir's Blond Eckbert with English National Opera was recorded and released by Collins Classics.
