The German organist, harpsichordist and conductor, Johannes Skudlik, attended the Munich University of Music studying liturgical music and concert organ with Gerhard Weinberger and Franz Lehrndorfer.
Since 1979 Johannes Skudlik has been titular organist at the central church Mariae Himmelfahrt in Landsberg am Lech (Bavaria). He founded and directs the Landsberg Oratorio Choir, several chamber choirs and the Con-brio Chamber Orchestra of Munich. With these ensembles, he performed the famous masses by Haydn, L.v. Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Puccini, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B-minor (BWV 232) and the St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) as well as the Requiems of Mozart, Verdi and (BWV 232) and furthermore the oratorios composed by George Frideric Handel, J. Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn and Dvorak. On these occasions, soloists have included Aldo Baldin, Thomas Cooley, Cornelia Kallisch, Julie Kaufmann, Peter Lika, Carlos Mena, Monica Pick-Hieronimi, Hermann Prey, Marga Schiml, Peter Schreier, Roberto Saccá and Harald Stamm.
As an orchestra conductor, Skudlik performed symphonies by Mozart, L.v. Beethoven and Bruckner in cooperation with members of the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester. In 2008, he conducted the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in a performance of J. S. Bach’s Mass in B-minor (BWV 232) in Landsberg. Johannes Skudlik, together with his orchestra and his choirs, has been invited to perform in concerts and festivals in Greece, Spain, Italy and France.
As an organist and harpsichordist, Johannes Skudlik has given concerts in almost every country in Europe, in the USA and in the Far East, in the great concert halls of Tokyo, St. Petersburg, Breslau, Boston (Harvard University) and the Tonhalle Zurich, as well as at the Philharmonies of Munich, Hong Kong and in Gdansk together with Reinhold Friedrich. He has repeatedly been a guest performer in the cathedrals of Cologne, Munich, Seville, Bourges, Hamburg, Chester, Salamanca, Lausanne and Warsaw, in New York’s St. Bartholomew’s and in Paris’ Ste. Clothilde and Notre Dame. Several times he has been invited to the festivals of Verona, Zürich and Copenhagen.
In the meantime, the labels Ambitus and Motette have published more than 20 CD-recordings of him on harpsichord, organ and with chamber music. In 1989 Verdi’s Requiem and F. Mendelssohn’s Elijah were recorded by the Landsberg Oratorio Choir and members of the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester. Johannes Skudlik has recorded radio productions in cooperation with RIAS Berlin, WGBH Radio Boston, RAI uno, Polish Television and the Bayerische Rundfunk.
Johannes Skudlik is the artistic director of various festivals such as the “Landsberger Konzerte” and the “Bayerische Orgelsommer”. Following his initiative and under his artistic guidance, major European Organ festivals have been realised: 2005 the “European Organ Festival Via Claudia Augusta”, 2006 “Mozart on his journeys to…” 2008 “Euro-Via-Festival: On the way to Rome” and 2011 „Euro-Via-Festival: From Rome to Santiago“ featuring concerts of superb artists like Sir Simon Preston, Naji Hakim, Jean Guillou, as well as members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Münchener Bach-Chor and the Münchner Symphoniker. |
