The Dutch choral conductor, Herman Schimmel, studied choral conducting with Eduard Nieland and obtained his diploma in choral conducting in 1986 and his diploma for choral and instrumental ensemble at the SNK (now LKCA) in 1991. Between 1994 and 2001 he attended various directing courses, including with Lukas Vis, Peter O'Brien and Simon Dearsley in Dartington (England). He also studied Communication Management at Van der Hilst Communicatie (1990-1992); and obtained his MSc degree in E-learning, multimedia (2001-2004), and his PhD degree in E-learning, Knowledge Management, Change management (2006-2013) from Sheffield Hallam University.
From 1975 to the present day Herman Schimmel has conducted many choirs and performed regularly as a replacement for various choirs. In the past 43 years he has conducted choirs for boys and children, male choirs, mixed choirs, oratorio choirs and chamber choirs. He has regularly performed as a replacement for various choirs in the area.
Herman Schimmel has been cantor / organist of the Protestant congregation in Huissen since 2000; from 1997 to 2017 he was conductor of the Projectkoor Midden Nederland and from September 2015 conductor of the St. Maartenskerkkoor in Elst. His repertoire includes a large number of J.S. Bach cantatas, Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), Markus-Passion (BWV 247) and Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach; Coronation Anthems, Chandos Anthems and the Ode of St. Celia's Day by George Frideric Handel; Gloria in D by Antonio Vivaldi; Masses by J. Haydn, Requiem by W.A. Mozart and many other works for choir and orchestra.
In addition to his activities as an organist and conductor, Herman Schimmel is also active in music in other areas as director, consultant, researcher and coach. He was Marketing & PR Manager at De Gelderlander (November 1977-October 2009); Senior communicatieadviseur at Gemeente Overbetuwe (November 2009-December 2016); Secretary of Koornetwerk Nederland (2012-2019). Currently he is Chairman of the KCZB (since May 2005), Chief Editor of Magazine Vocaal (since June 2010), Owner/Manager at Alosta Advies in Elst (since April 2016), and Manager at Oost-Betuwse Uitdaging in Elst (since May 2019). He is also Secretary of Rotaryclub Elst Over-Betuwe (since August 2013), and part-time Rotary Foundation District Chair (2020-2023). He currently lives in Elst, Gelderland, the Netherlands. |
