The Stockholm Bach Choir (= SBC), in Sweden "Bachkören", was formed in 1964 by Anders Öhrwall as a group specialising in the music of the Baroque. The Choir had started with concert activities in its home church of Adolf Fredrik in Stockholm, and was associated with this church until 1999. During 1998 the Choir, together with the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and Anders Öhrwall, presented a Bach Festival at Adolf Fredrik Church. In the course of eleven concerts the two ensembles performed all of Bach’s main vocal compositions (the St John (BWV 245) and St Matthew Passions (BWV 244), the Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) and the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248)), motets and cantatas. As a result of The Bach Festival two recordings were released: Bach Highlights and The B-minor Mass BWV 232). Until 1999 the Choir was called Adolf Fredriks Bachkör, then became independent.
During the years 2000-2002 the Stockholm Bach Choir collaborated with the concert venue Nalen in Stockholm. From spring 2003 another collaboration with the parish of Sundbyberg, a suburb of Stockholm, has started, where the Choir now participates in services and concerts.
The Stockholm Bach Choir's performances are distinguished by musical vivacity, suppleness of rhythm and carefully moulded articulation. The choir has earned for itself, through concert tours, gramophone recordings and radio and television broadcasts, an important place in Swedish music-making. Baroque music apart, the bulk of its repertoire consists of Anders Öhrwall's adaptations of traditional music, many of them written for the annual Christmas concerts. |
