Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble (Instrumental Baroque Ensemble) |
Founded: 1971 - Drottningholm, Sweden |
The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble shines brightly in the world of Baroque music. The ensemble's delight in playing adds a special lustre to their period instruments. This special quality has characterized the ensemble since 1971 when it was founded by Lars Brolin, at the Royal Opera House Orchestra. Today, six musicians form the heart of the ensemble, but their ranks may swell to nine or even thirty members as the repertoire requires.
The group’s sparkling sound and dazzling technique have brought world-wide fame and have invited tours of Europe, the Far East, the USA and Australia, as well as stage and recording collaborations with many celebrity soloists. A growing list of distinguished guest conductors includes such well-known names as Christopher Hogwood, Andrew Parrott, Sigiswald Kuijken and Eric Ericson.
The ensemble has recorded a great number of works by composers such as George Frideric Handel, J.S. Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann, as well as the Swedish Baroque composer Roman. Their recording of The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi met with an enthusiastic reception and was mentioned by several international critics as the very best version of this work. The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble is always imaginative, never dull. Who would have thought that such all-round proficiency could set the baroque barocking! |
