Hélène Plouffe (Violin, Viola, Viola d’amore)

Born: 1965- Canada

The Canadian violinist and violist, Hélène Plouffe, started both violin and piano at the age of 5, joined her first symphony orchestra at the age of 10, and entered and won her first competition at the age of 12. Having studied under such notable teachers as Luis Grinhauz and Mauricio Fuks, she went on to McGill University and completed her degree in performance, receiving several scholarships for the highest grades achieved. She was the first student at McGill to major in the study of Baroque violin.

Hélène Plouffe went on to perform with the Studio de musique de Montréal, Les Idées heureuses (Director: Geneviève Soly), and Ensemble Arion, to name a few. Sponsored by both provincial and federal governements, she won an honorable mention as a soloist and third prize in chamber music at the Festival Musica Antiqua in Bruges, Belgium, in summer of 1993.

Hélène Plouffe has a passion for early music and performs it in all possible guises: as soloist, chamber player, in string quartet, and in orchestra. In order to touch upon as vast a repertory as possible on period instruments, she is equally fluent on the baroque violin, the Baroque viola, and the viola d’amore. Hélène Plouffe is an instructor of Baroque violin and viola at McGill University, is a founding member of the Boréades ensemble and of the Franz Joseph String Quartet, and is concertmaster of La Nouvele Sinfonie, the Theatre of Early Music, and the Académie Baroque de Montréal.
