The Musicalische Compagney, an ensemble devoted to music of the 16th and 17th centuries, was founded in 1972 by Holger Eichhorn (cornettist and musicologist) and Klaus Eichhorn (church musician), and has worked since 1974 in what has become its worldwide character as respected brand name. Taking as a working title Versuch über die wahre Art, historische Musik zu spielen (An experiment in the real way to play historic music), strives to reconcile a historically accuratable - i.e. intellectually appropriate - presentation of the correlation of timbre, delivery and emotional expression with actual performance.
The focus of the work in addition to the instrumental music (canzoni, sonatas and suites primarily with cornetts, violins, trumpets, dulcianes, chitarrones, organ) is the vocal / instrumental sacred music of the 17th century, especially the works of Heinrich Schütz. The Musicalische Compagney has consolidated its reputation as a rather special ensemble with numerous concerts in Germany and abroad (Belgium, Denmark, East Germany, France, Holland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, USA... ), and with radio and television broadcasts and gramophone recordings. Among the major events in their work in the early 1980's were an hour-long television film, the first performance of Monteverdi's Vespers, in the conjectural original version and an annual series of concerts which the group ran for several years. They have recorded works by Giovanni Battista Buonamente, Giovanni Legrenzi, Giovanni Valentini, Heinrich Aloys Brückner, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Johann Joseph Fux, Marco Antonio Ferro, Andrea Falconieri, Dario Castello, Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger, Orlando di Lasso, J.S. Bach. |
