João Moreira (Tenor)

Born: 1980 - Évora, Portugal

The Potugusese tenor, João Moreira, began his musical studies at the age of 8 at the Academia de Música Eborense, where he studied piano with Maria de Lurdes Horta and oboe with Andrew Swinnerton. In 2000, he finished the General Singing Course of the Academia de Música Eborense, being a student of Maria Repas Gonçalves. He graduated in singing from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa under the guidance of Professor Sílvia Mateus. He also participated in several training courses and workshops, particularly in the Encontros do Espírito Santo (Évora), where he studied with Maria Cristina Kiehr; Curs de Música Antiga a Catalunya, where he worked with Jordi Savall, Pedro Memelsdroff (chamber music) and Gloria Banditelli (singing); and the International Symposium «Escola de Música da Sé de Évora», where he worked with Peter Phillips and Owen Rees.

João Moreira's repertoire as a soloist includes, among other works, Cantata BWV 7 Christ unser Herr zum Jordan Kam, Magnificat (BWV 243), Mass in G major (BWV 236), Mass in G minor (BWV 235) by J.S. Bach; Stabat Mater for 10 voices by Scarlatti, Jephté by Carissimi, Dixit Dominus and Messiah by George Frideric Handel, Mass in G by Carlos Seixas, Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, Choral Fantasy by L.v. Beethoven, Coronation Mass and Vesperae Solennes of Confessore by Mozart and Lauda Sion by Felix Mendelssohn.

João Moreira sang the role of Orfeu in the opera of the same name by Fernando N. Lobo at Sala Jardim de Inverno do Teatro Municipal de São Luiz. With the Baroque ensemble La Nave Va, he was Ixion in the opera La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers by Charpentier. He also performed the role of Tenor, Augustine (Pai do Zé Maria) in the opera Orquídea Branca, by Jorge Salgueiro. He joined the cast of the opera Crioulo by António Tavares in a production of the CCB and the Fundação Gulbenkian (Gulbenkian Foundation), was Giliberto in the opera La Zaira by Marcos Portugal. With the quartet Tetvocal, Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa and Coro Ricercare, he performed and recorded the work In Paradisum by Eurico Carrapatoso.

João Moreira is a member of the Coro Gulbenkian since 2000, often appears with chamber ensembles for interpretation of a varied repertoire, from Renaissance to contemporary Portuguese music. Under the direction of Michel Corboz, he performed as a soloist in the Stabat Mater to 10 voices of Domenico Scarlatti, in Portugal and Spain (in a concert given by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, to the King of Spain) and at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. He also collaborates since January 2009 with the Nederlands Kamerkoor in various projects in the Netherlands.
