The Portuguese tenor, Carlos António da Fonseca Monteiro, started his musical studies at the Conservatório Regional de Setúbal-Portugal (1994-2003), having studied piano with António Toscano and vocal technique with Sílvia Martinho. Simultaneously, he graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (1996-2002). He finished his studies on the Vocal course at Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa in the class of Rute Dutra (2004-2010). In 2013 he finished his Vocal degree with the maximum classification on the final exam at Superior School of Music of Lisbon, in the class of Luís Madureira (2010-2013). Finished in 2018 the Master studies of Music degree in Singing, Early Music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. He has participated in many of the International Early Music Courses organized by the Academia de Música Antiga de Lisboa (2005-2010), where he worked with Jill Feldman on vocal technique and style in early and Baroque, with German, Italian, English and French repertoire. In March 2009, he participated in the Workshop on the Early Singing at CCB (Lisbon) with Maria Cristina Kiehr. He attended private lessons with Howard Crook, Susan Waters and Elisabete Matos and had master-classes with Enza Ferrari, Howard Crook and Tom Krause. He participated in many competitions, such as the 1st National Competition in Singing of Official Conservatories (Aveiro, 2007), the 2nd edition of Prémio José Augusto Alegria (ÉÉvora, 2008), the competition of Lyric Singing of the Portuguese Rotary Foundation (2010) and the singing competition Luisa Todi (Setúbal, 2011).
Carlos Monteiro is a self-employed tenor singer since 2012. He has been a member of many choirs, from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, the University of Lisbon, the Associação Musical Lisboa Cantat and the Associação Sintra Estúdio de Ópera. During 2014, he performed with the Dutch ensemble Norg Consort and is part of the Dutch ensemble Margaretha Consort, working mainly early music. As a singer in the ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya (Director: Jordi Savall; since June 2013), he first performed the program Magnificat & Concerti (2014) and since then sings regularly with this ensemble. He is also a member of the Vocal Ensemble Olisipo from Lisbon, Portugal (since October 2012), Os Músicos do Tejo from Lisbon, Portugal (since September 2017), and sang with Cappella Amsterdam (Director: Daniel Reuss) from the Netherlands (Internship April 2018).
Carlos Monteiro sang as a soloist at the Opening Concert of the Restoration of the 6 Organs of the Royal Basilica of Mafra (2011) and at the delivery of the Europa Nostra Award 2012. He also performed Tu é a esperança, a madrugada… (J.S. Béreau) and Iphigenia and Isaac as Abraão (A kills B performances), the cantata A Paz da Europa (J.D. Rossini), Basilio/Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro (W.A. Mozart), Romeo in Romeo et Juliette (Charles Gounod), Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi (G. Puccini), Nerone in L’Incoronazione di Poppea (C. Monteverdi), Catone in Catone in Utica (Antonio Vivaldi), Ulisse in Penelope la casta (Alessandro Scarlatti), Paride in Il ratto di Helena (Marco Vitale).
