The Belgian tenor, Guy de Mey, studied singing with Erna Spoorenberg, Sir Peter Pears and Eric Tappy. In 1975, he was awarded a prize at the National Musical Competition Pro Civitate in Saint Niklaas.
Today, after 20 years, Guy de Mey can look back over a sensational international career comprising hundreds of concerts and opera productions as much in Europe as in the USA, Canada, Israel and Japan. He has recorded more than 50 records (up to 1995) with leading conductors (John Eliot Gardiner, Ton Koopman, Roger Norrington, Michel Corboz, William Christie, Jordi Savall, René Jacobs, etc.), several of which have been awarded international prizes (Grand Prix du Disque, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Caecilia Award). Guy de Mey was awarded the ‘Hendrik Caspeele Operaprijs’ prize in 1990 by the Belgian Association de la Presse Musicale for his outstanding artistic influence.
Guy de Mey was invited by Erato to take part in the recording of the J.S. Bach’s complete vocal works under the baton of Ton Koopman - the B minor Mass (BWV 232), St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), St. John Passion (BWV 245), Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) and the complete cantatas. His performance of the Evangelist was hailed by the international press as a revelation.
Next season (1996), he can be heard once again in the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in The Makropoulos Case by Janáček and in Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245) with the Anima Eterna Ensemble, conducted by Jos van Immerseel.
Since 1992, Guy de Mey has taught singing in the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liège. |
