The members of the Marsh Chapel Choir are a varied lot. Though most are from Boston University, that population is diverse. There are students, both graduate and undergraduate, from the School of Engineering, School of Theology, the College of Arts and Sciences, Sargent College, and the School for the Arts, and even a senior in the Boston University Academy. The choir also has a number of professionals from the community who join in the music, as well as a scattering of students from other schools, including the Berklee College of Music. Membership in the Marsh Chapel Choir is earned through auditions in the summer and early fall, with a committment that lasts through Baccalaureate in May. Each member is a part of the weekly service at Marsh Chapel, which is heard by over 40,000 listeners weekly, as well as several major concerts throughout the year, including the Annual Festival of New Music in February.
Since 2004, Scott Allen Jarrett is the Director of Music at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel. He oversees the rich musical life of Marsh Chapel, directing a music staff of associates, managers, Choral Scholars, Conducting Fellows and artistic supervision of the Inner Strength Gospel. He regularly conducts the great masterworks of the choral/orchestral repertoire, with a particular focus on the works of J.S. Bach. Having established the Bach Cantata Series at March Chapel, he has conducted the Marsh Chapel Choir in more than 35 cantatas and multiple performances of each of J.S. Bach’s four major choral works: St. John Passion (BWV 245), St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Mass in B minor (BWV 232) and Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248). |
