The Japanese soprano, Yumiko Kurisu, graduated in 1984 from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, having specialised in the performance practices and vocal techniques of the 17th and 18th centuries. Kuriso won the 2nd prize at the 4th Early Music Competition, Yamanashi and the 2nd Tochigi Kuranomachi Music Festival award. She completed her doctorate at the same institute in 1994.
Yumiko Kurisu makes Baroque music her focus, often appearing in performances of works such as Bach's cantatas, Monteverdi' Vespers, George Frideric Handel's Messiah and J.S. Bach's Passions. She gave soprano recitals on The Art of Singing in the 17th & 18th centuries in 1992 and 1993; and more soprano recitals in 2001 and 2005.
Fom 1998 to 1991 Yumiko Kurisu was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Oita; Since 2001 she is Associated Professor of Music, The Oita University, Faculty of Education and Welfare Science. Current research topics: 17th & 18th Century Vocal Style and technique. Agilita, Messa di voce, Aesthetics and history of Arts, Cantatas in the 17th and 18th centuries, G.F. Handel, J.S. Bach.
