Frank Kelley (Tenor)

Born: USA

Talent and versatility are only two of the outstanding qualities of young American tenor, Frank Kelley, who has performed in concert and opera throughout North America and Europe. Recently released recordings feature Frank Kelley in repertoire spanning ten centuries and include three Deutsche Harmonia Mundi CD’s with the ensemble Sequentia: ‘Aquitania", "Shining Light", and "Saints"; a Teldec release of Igor Stravinsky’s Renard with Hugh Wolff and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; and Kurt Weill’s Das Kleine Mahagonny with Kent Nagano, available on London videotape and on CD from Erato.

Recently, Frank Kelley appeared as Basilio in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze Di Figaro and as Gaston in La Traviata with the Boston Lyric Opera; with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra singing I. Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra singing M. Triquet in a concert version of Eugene Onegin; with the National Symphony Orchestra singing the role of Master of Ceremonies in the Queen Of Spades; with National Arts Centre Orchestra singing Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, and in J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) with Emmanuel Music and the Berkshire Choral Festival. In 2002 he appeared as Monastatos in Die Zauberflöte with the Boston Lyric Opera.

In 1997 Frank Kelley appeared with the Mark Morris Dance Company in a production of George Frideric Handel’s L’Allegro il Penseroso ed il Moderato with performances in Hong Kong and Los Angeles and at the New Israeli Opera. He also sang the role of Charlie in Das Kleine Mahagonny directed by Peter Sellars at the Frankfurt opera and at MC93/Bobigny in Paris. He continued his affiliation with the Boston Lyric Opera as Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor and as Schmidt in Werther, sang J.S. Bach cantatas under the direction of Christopher Hogwood, Craig Smith and Seiji Ozawa, and gave recitals of Schubert Lieder for Emmanuel Music’s Schubert series in Boston, as well as at the Aston Magna Festival, accompanied by Malcolm Bilson.

Previous seasons’ highlights include the PBS broadcasts of Le Nozze di Figaro and Cosi fan tutte directed by Peter Sellars; Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and at the Opera de Lyon; Das Kleine Mahagonny at the Next Wave Festival; G.F. Handel’s L’Allegro il Penseroso ed il Moderato for Serious Fun at Lincoln Center; Le Nozze Di Figaro with the Boston Opera Theater, Cosi Fan Tutte at Pepsico Summerfare; Stephen Climax at the Brussels Opera; Pang in Turandot with the Cleveland Orchestra; Turandot, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Die Zauberflöte with the San Francisco Opera; J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) with Christopher Hogwood and the Handel and Haydn Society; J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Boston Baroque and Emmanuel Music; St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244 at the Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival (2008); Messiah with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, the Dallas Bach Society and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and Felix Mendelssohn’s The First Walpurgis Night with Roger Norrington and the Orchestra of St. Lukes.
