Haags Barokgezelschap (Choir & Baroque Ensemble)

Founded: 1985 - Scheveningen, the Netherlands

The Haags Barokgezelschap (= HBG; Hague Baroque Company) is a project choir and orchestra based in the Nieuwe Badkapel in Scheveningen. Artistic director and conductor is Gilles Michels. The HBG, which was founded in 1985 by Jaap Hillen, consists of enthusiastic and experienced amateur musicians. They focus on works for choir and orchestra from the Baroque, especially those by J.S. Bach.

Six times a year the HBG participates in cantata services in the Nieuwe Badkapel. Five of these J.S. Bach cantatas can also be heard at the Dorpskerk in Wassenaar. Towards Easter they perform J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) or Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). During the Christmas season, works such as J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) or George Frideric Handel's Messiah are on the program. The HBG has also performed works from periods other than the Baroque, such as Johannes Brahms' Requiem. People have also been introduced to them elsewhere in the Netherlands and abroad.
