Het Haags Barokgezelschap (HBG; the Hague Baroque Society) was founded in 1985 by Jaap Hillen and was under his leadership until his death on June 27, 2008. The current Artistic Director and Conductor is Gilles Michels.
The Bach Cantatas of HBG are regularly heard in church services, including in Wassenaar and Scheveningen.
Every year, at Easter, the HBG performs J.S. Bach’s Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) or Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). In recent years Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) was performed by HBG not just in Scheveningen, but also in Zaltbommel, Zevenbergen, Antwerp and Paris. Other major works by J.S. Bach, including the Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) Mass in B minor (BWV 232) are part of the repertoire of the HBG. Furthermore, the HBG gives concerts with motets and instrumental works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart's Requiem and G. Fauré's Requiem.
The HBG choir and orchestra consist of good and experienced amateur musicians. In cantatas and concerts the HBG works with renowned vocal soloists. |
