The German mezzo-soprano, Marie-Louise (Marie-Luise) Gilles, studied at the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen with Hilde Wesselmann.
Marie-Louise Gilles sang at the Wiesbaden Opera from 1962, as Octavian, Dorabella and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos. She was engaged at Staatsoper Munich from 1964 to 66, in Bremen from 1966 to 1968. She sang at Hannover Opera from 1968, notably as Azucena, Brangaene, Eboli, Waltraute, Fricka, Ortrud, Alban Berg's Marie and Countess Geschwitz and Santuzza. She appeared at Bayreuth Festival in 1968-1969, and also at the Dubrovnik and Salzburg Easter Festivals. She had concert engagements in Washington, New York, Vienna, Paris and Lisbon.
Marie-Louise Gilles has been Professor at the Hanover Musikhochschule from 1982.
