The American mezzo-soprano and vocal pedagogue, Elizabeth (Liz) Eschen Liz, obtained her Bacholr of Arts in Vocal Performance and English Music from Providence College (2002-2006); and her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Boston University (2006-2008).
Elizabeth Eschen is based in Boston, Massachusetts and sings regularly with Boston Baroque (since October 2016), Music at Marsh Chapel, Cantata Singers, Bach Akademie Charlotte (since April 2018), and Vox Futura recordings; she has also sung with Boston Lyric Opera (chorus member since August 2016; 2017's Georges Bizet's Carmen), Lorelei Ensemble as a founding member, Ampersand, Juventas!, Manhattan Chorale, and Convergence Ensemble. In 2016, she sang “Ensemble” for the American cast album recording of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. She particularly loves the depth and humanity in the music of J.S. Bach, and holds a special place for singing with the Oregon Bach Festival, Charlotte Bach Festival (B minor Mass BWV 232 soloist), Rilling Bach Choir (special 2017 performance of Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 in Schwäbisch-Gmünd), and the 2016 and 2017 Weimar Bach Academies.
Although Elizabeth Eschen made her professional solo debut in opera with Opera Tampa’s Suor Angelica in February 2009, and was Opera Singer at Capitol Opera Richmond (September 2012-March 2013), she has increasingly found her solo home in oratorio. Recent solo performances include Kallembach’s Most Sacred Body (2017 recording) and J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Music at Marsh Chapel, Chadwick’s Noel: A Christmas Pastoral and Arthur Honegger;s Le roi David (Jordan Hall debut) with Cantata Singers, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem with Harvard Glee Club and Radcliffe Choral Society, J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 6 with Quincy Choral Society, and L.v. Beethoven's Mass in C with Newburyport Chorale. She will be making her Back Bay Chorale solo debut this season with the Sergei Rachmaninov's Vespers, Scott Allen Jarrett conducting.
Elizabeth Eschen strongly believes in the synthesis of vocal pedagogy and choral music. She was Adjunct Professor of Voice at Randolph-Macon College (September 2009-May 2013); Voice and chorus teacher at Fredericksburg Academy (August 2008-June 2013); Music Department Assistant; Dorm Parent at Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts (August 2014-May 2016); Voice Teacher at Regis College Weston, Massachusetts (September 2014-May 2016); Voice Teacher at Allegro Music School in in Natick, Massachusetts (February 2015-June 2017). She currently holds positions at Harvard University (Director of Holden Voice Program since September 2015; Teaching Fellow with the Radcliffe Choral Society since September 2018; Director of the New Music Initiative since April 2018) and Gordon College (Adjunct Voice Instructor). She has also been Cantor at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Boston (September 2016-April 2018) and at Gate of Heaven Parish in Boston (since November 2016). |
