Ensemble 258 was created by André Ferreira, Maria Bayley and Teresa Duarte in 2018. Dedicated to early music, its name was inspired by the door number of the Instituto Gregoriano of Lisbon, the school where the 3 members of the ensemble met and did all the work. their academic musical journey, before entering higher education.
The 7 Colinas / 7 Cantatas project is an initiative of Ensemble 258. It consists of a cycle of classical music concerts with repertoire from the Baroque period. The guiding link of the various events is the interpretation of a cantata, in this case by the famous German composer J.S. Bach, who elevated this musical genre to its highest exponent in his time. Each cantata is joined by a repertoire of other lesser-known Baroque composers, of different nationalities, on a monthly basis and in different venues in the city of Lisbon. The composition of the ensemble to interpret the works has a variable formation, depending on the needs of the repertoire. All concerts have the presence of a guest conductor, a reference musician in the early music scene.
In summary, the project aims to:
● increase cultural diversity in the municipality of Lisbon, where early music concerts are still scarce.
● promote Lisbon's architectural heritage, bringing music to its historic churches.
● create points of contact between different generations of musicians, through interaction with guest conductors.
● publicizing the important work of J.S. Bach in the Portugal's capital, similarly to similar cycles in other European capitals.
● give visibility to lesser known composers, including Portuguese composers or composers who have been active in Portugal. |
