Coline Dutilleul (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Tournai, Belgium

The Belgian mezzo-soprano, Coline Dutilleul, was already exposed both to the art of singing and to the art of playing the piano at a young age. She studied at the Royal Conservatories of Mons and Brussels, and later at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. At the same time, she continued to work regularly on vocal technique with the Welsh soprano, Catrin Wyns-Davis. She attended various international master-classes as an active participant including those with Barbara Fink (or Bernarda Fink), Natalie Dessay, Barbara Hannigan, Nadine Denize, Sylvie Valaire, Peter Kooy, Jard van Nes and specializing in Lied, classes with the pianists Ulrich Eisenlohr, Roger Braun, Raimund Laufen and Roger Vignoles. In 2011, she was awarded the Prize “Jeanne Flament", an award in the competition entitled Patrimoine du Conservatoire in Brussels, specializing particularly in the interpretation of music of the Baroque period. In 2014, she was finalist in the second International Competition of Barock Music in Froville and semi-finalist in the very last International Mozarteum Competition in Salzburg. In September 2015, she was awarded the second prize as well as the special prize of the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, at the Internationale Musikwettbewerb Köln. This prize gave her the opportunity of producing a demo recording with this prestigious orchestra.

Coline Dutilleul continued amassing her experiences throughout Europe in various International Academies: The Academy of Ambronay with Leonardo García-Alarcón (J.S. Bach, L’Orfeo by Monteverdi); The III Academy of Formacion Professional, conducted by Jordi Savall; the Lucern Festival Academy directed by Simon Rattle and Barbara Hannigan (as first alto in the Coro of Luciano Berio); the International Bach Academy of Stuttgart conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann; the Britten-Pears Young Talent Program with Natalie Dessay and Roger Vignoles.

Since 2005, Coline Dutilleul has been sharing her musical experiences and projects as a soloist, chamber musician and chorister. She has participated in many productions in Europe with renowned conductors like Simon Rattle, Jordi Savall, Philippe Herreweghe, Raphaël Pichon, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Patrick Davin, Guy Van Waas, Vincent Dumestre, Leonardo García-Alarcón. These collaborations have led her to perform throughout Europe in festivals and renowned halls.

Since September 2015, Coline Dutilleul joined the Opera Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg (OnR). During these two years, she assumed the roles of Rosine in the Barber of Seville by Paisiello, of the cruel stepmother in Cendrillon by Wolf-Ferrari (December 2015-January 2016), of Clarina in Cambiale di Matrimonio by Rossini (March-April 2016), of Carmen in Georges Bizet's opera of the same name, of Leonora in La Favorite by Donizetti (May 2016), of The Death of Cléopâtre by Berlioz, the old woman in Mririda in the world prémière by A. Essyad (September 2016), of the queen in Blanche Neige (Snow White) by Felix Lang (December 2016-January 2017), of Constanza in L’Isola Disabitata by Haydn (February-March 2017), of Marianna in Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini (April-May 2017) and finally, as Dido in Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell (April-June 2017). In 2015, she played Miss Jessel in Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw at the Theatre of Aix-la-Chapelle and at the Aachen Theater (June 2015). This season (2017-2018) she was the 3rd Bénévole in the creation Miranda at the Opéra Comique of Paris, one of the Mädchen in Der Zwerg by Zemlinsky at the Opéra of Lille (November 2017) and Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites in Avignon’s opera (January 2018).

Coline Dutilleul was invited to perform as soloist in the festival “Young Talent” in Schiermonnikoog with the pianist Craig White (The Netherlands), and on stage at the festival of Lucern where she performed La Chanson Perpétuelle by Chausson in a quintet with the pianist and composer Huw Watkins, under the artistic direction of Barbara Hannigan. In the field of oratorio, she has performed with the Chapelle Musicale of Tournai in the Mass in A flat major by Schubert, with the Camerata Vocale in the Mass in B minor (BWV 232) by J.S. Bach, with the string ensemble of the Demoiselles du Salon in the Stabat Maters by Antonio Vivaldi and by Boccherini, as well as with the Capriccio Français in Paris in the great Missa in c minor by W.A. Mozart.

Coline Dutilleul continues her regular collaboration with the Baroque ensembles: Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe), La Capella Reial de Catalunya (Director: Jordi Savall) as well as Ensemble Pygmalion (Director: Raphaël Pichon). Since 2005, she has taken part in the interpretation of Baroque music with the following ensembles: “Viva Flamma”, “Les Façons du temps”, les menus plaisir du Roy” and “bel Ayre”. In 2015, she rejoined the barock ensemble Vendetta in a program consecrated to French Baroque music of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Part of Coline Dutilleul's time is also consecrated to the interpretation of contemporary literature and music of the whole world. In the past few years, she has performed within the frame of competitions of contemporary composition in Cergy-Pontoise (Franca), at the Festival Ars Musica (Belgium), as well as in the festival of Lucern in Switzerland. At the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg, she participated in the creation of the contemporary opera entitled Neige by Catherine Kontz and directed by Gerry Cornellius. She has also worked with composers such as Michel Gonneville, Paul Mefano, Benoit Mernier, J- Ph Collard-Neven and Stéphane Colin. Finally, she has taken part in a project of contemporary music entitled Almanara directed by Elio Baudimont who brought together Palestinian and Belgian artists in original compositions based upon the texts of Mahmoud Darwich. She has formed a duo with guitar and voice called “Una Corda” with the Lebanise guitarist K. Abdul-Malek, and eventually Yohan Fostier, in which they interpret Spanish, Sephardic and contemporary works.

Coline Dutilleul is presently the recipient of the grant “Jeune Talent” from the Foundation Securex. She currently lives in Strasbourg, France.
