The Dutch organist, Gerben Budding, studied organ, improvisation, churc hmusic and choral conducting at the Utrecht Conservatory with Reitze Smits, Mark Lippe, Arnoud Heerings and Rob Vermeulen. His second subjects were piano (with Henk Ekkel and Leon Bak) and harpsichord (with Siebe Henstra). In 2009 and 2011 he graduated summa cum laude for his Bachelor and Master degree organ (with improvisation), church music and choral conducting. He got interpretation lessons organ and improvisation from Louis Robillard, Martin Haselböck, Thierry Escaich and Professor Rudolf Lutz and studied Orchestra conducting at the Kurt Thomas Course. In 2013 he won 1st Prize at the international organ competition ‘Agati-Tronci’ in Pistoia (Italy) and second prize at the international Schnitger competition in Alkmaar (The Netherlands).
From September 2009 to June 2018, Gerben Budding was the principal organist of the Bätz-Witte organ (1853) in Gorinchem. He was also Organist at the City Gorinchem (2016-2018). Since July 2018, he is the Principal Organist of the Sint-Janskerk of Gouda with his historic Moreau-organ from 1736 and organist of the city Gouda in the Netherlands. He also is one of the assistant-organists at Domkerk Utrecht and is cantor of the choir of the Theological University Apeldoorn.
Gerben Budding is in demand as a recitalist both as a soloist and as part of the Ensemble Rood Hout (organ and harpsichord). As a conductor he leads three oratorio choirs, vocal ensemble ‘Piacevole’, the choir of St. Jan Gouda, orchestra ‘Intermezzo’ and symphony orchestra Sjosjanim. He is also active as a music teacher and composer of liturgical music. |
