The American soprano, Elizabeth Bates, holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in French from Middlebury College.
Based in New York City since 2011, Elizabeth Bates is increasingly in demand as a performer of both early and new music scenes for her high, pure tone. She began her career with the Schola Cantorum of the Church of Saint Agnes, New York City. She is now a regular soprano with the Trinity Wall Street Choir, appearing as a soloist in the Bach at One series, Concerts at One, and for liturgical events. She has also appeared with the American Classical Orchestra, Downtown Voices, Pro Arte Singers of New Canaan, Connecticut, and Charis Chamber Voices of Bedford, New York. She has also appeared with John Zorn, the American Composers Orchestra, Bang on a Can All-Stars, the American Classical Orchestra, and the Wordless Music Orchestra.
Solo performances include W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Church of Saint Agnes and both George Frideric Handel's Messiah and Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with Trinity Wall Street, for which the New York Times described her Pie Jesu as “a limpid, sweetly optimistic plea for eternal rest.” She has appeared on some of the world’s most recognized stages, including Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, Notre Dame de Paris, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Brooklyn’s National Sawdust.
Her 2016-2017 season performances included tours of both George Frideric Handel's Messiah and J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor (BWV 232) to Montreal and California. She joined one hundred musicians from the Wordless Music Orchestra to perform the live music accompaniment to Terrance Malick’s film The Tree of Life. She also appeared with The Thirteen in Washington, D.C. She performed with the six-voice ensemble John Zorn’s Madrigals in front of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Her March 2017 performance of Steve Reich’s Tehillim with the American Composers Orchestra marked her Carnegie Hall debut. The 2017-2018 season includes appearances with John Zorn in Sarajevo and the Netherlands, Bang on a Can All-Stars in Washington, D.C. and her second season with The Thirteen.
