Basler Madrigalisten (Vocal Ensemble)

Founded: 1978 - Basel, Switzerland

The Basler Madrigalisten, a vocal ensemble comprising 4 to 24 singers, equally at home as soloists or choristers, have a wide repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the music of our time. The Basler Madrigalisten were founded at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in 1978 by Fritz Näf.

Programmes: The Basler Madrigalisten specialise in the performance of early and contemporary music (commissioning of new works, world premières), and of historical music from all epochs, especially unjustly forgotten works. The programme make-up is usually dictated by a particular theme.

Activities: They have performed at the world’s most prestigious music festivals and toured in nearly every European country, in Russia, the USA, Lebanon and the Far East. An outstanding event in the history of the Basler Madrigalisten was the invitation - as the first and only Swiss ensemble - to the 4th World Symposium on Choral Music and World Choral Festival in Sydney in 1996, with performances in the Sydney Opera House and in other concert halls, as well as a tour with concerts in Brisbane (Australia), Hong Kong and South Korea. Stage performances (madrigal comedies) and radio, TV and CD recordings are all an integral part of the ensemble’s wide variety of activities.

Awards: The Basler Madrigalisten received several awards: 1982: The German Gramophone Critics award for the recording series “Documenta” by the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis; 1998: European Trade and Industry promotional award 1991 and 2002: Prize for performance of contemporary music from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
