The Hungarian soprano, Emőke Barath, began her musical education studying the piano and harp. She began singing at the age of 18 following the teaching of Professor Júlia Pászthy at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. During the 2011-2012 school year, she also studied at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence with Professor Leonardo De Lisi. In 2009, she received the third prize at the 44th Anton Dvorak International Competition (Czech Republic). In 2011, she won the First Prize and the Award of the Public at the Second International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera in Innsbruck (Austria). The same year, she won the Grand Prix of Verbier Festival Academy (Switzerland). She was also awarded the prestigious Junio Prima Primissima Prize in Hungary. She took part in several master-classes with Barbara Bonney, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sylvia Sass, László Polgar, Nancy Argenta, Deborah York and Masaaki Suzuki.
Early on, Emöke Barath was invited to performas soloist in many festivals and venues as famous as the Palace of Arts and the Budapest State Opera in Hungary, the Theater an der Wien, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Opéra Royal de Versailles in France and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland ; the Nikolaisaal in Potsdam, the Braunschweig Staatstheater, and the Brandeburger Theater in Germany; the Concert Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Russia.
In 2013, Emöke Barath sang the title role of Elena by Cavalli at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Zerlina in Don Giovanni at the Budapest State Opera (Hungary), Oriana in Amadigi di Gaula and Alceste in Arianna in Creta by George Frideric Handel at the Theater an der Wien with Il Complesso Barocco and Alan Curtis. In November 2012 she released her first recording (NaÏve label: G.F. Handel's Giulio Cesare (the role of Sesto) with Il Complesso Barocco and Alan Curtis. In 2013-2014, she is Nanetta in Verdi's Falstaff at the Budapest Opera, the title-role of Elena by Cavalli in the Aix-en-Provence staging at the Opera de montpellier and Opéra de Versailles, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232) with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre (Essen, Lausanne, Amsterdam, Vienne, Köthen),
the role of Euridice in Monteverdi's L’Orfeo at the Opera de Nancy and at the Salle Pleyel with Les Talens Lyriques, and Antigona in Admeto at the Theater an der Wien and at the Krakow Philharmonic with Il Complesso Barocco and Alan Curtis. In the Theater an der Wien again, she sings Almirena in Rinaldo with Il Pomo d'Oro too.
In April 2014, Emöke Barath sings the soprano part in Duello Amoroso, a pasticcio after G.F. Handel, with Nathalie Stutzmann conducting the ensemble Orfeo 55 at the Bordeaux Opera (with Jean-Louis Grinda as director) and she takes part into Rameau’s Fêtes de Polymnie with the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra Budapest, conducted by György Vashegyi (Palace of Arts). In July, she is Tamiri in W.A. Mozart’s Il Re pastore with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra conducted by Gabor Takacs-Nagy, sings serveral J.S. Bach’s cantatas with Accademia Bizantina under the baton of Andreas Scholl (Festival de Beaune) as well as J.S. Bach’s Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with French Akadêmia Ensemble with Françoise Lasserre (Festival de La Chaise-Dieu). In October 2014, she is Despina in W.A. Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Budapest Opera, sings Scylla in Leclair’s Scylla et Glaucus (Opéra Royal de Versailles, Festival de musique baroque de Lyon). She is also a wonderful Asteria in G.F. Handel's Tamerlano with Les Ambassadeurs in Poznan.
Her next engagements include Susana in W.A. Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with Marc Minkowski conducting and Felix Breisach directing (Theater an der Wien), the soprano part in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony N°2 with the Valencia Orchestra conducted by Yaron Traub, Romilda in Cavalli’s Xerse with Le Concert d'Astrée, Emmanuelle Haïm and the director Guy Cassiers (Opéra de Lille, Théâtre de Caen, Konzerthaus Wien in a concert version), The Messiah with Nathalie Stutzmann conducting (Detroit Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra of Washington), W.A. Mozart’s Mass in C minor with the Bergen Philharmonic, Angelo in G.F. Handel's La Resurrezione with Le Concert des Nations and Jordi Savall (Opéra Royal de Versailles), J.S. Bach’s Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Emöke Barath has recorded the role Ormindo in G.F. Handel's Partenope with Il Pomo d'Oro conducted by Riccardo Minasi for Warner (alongside Karina Gauvin and Philippe Jaroussky), with a tour in February 2016 for the release of the recording. |
