The melody of the Chorale “Ist Gott mein Schild und Helfersmann” (If God is my protection and faithful Shepherd) was published, with Ernst Christoph Homburg’s Hymn, in Hundert ahnmuthig- und sonderbahr geistlicher Arien (Dresden, 1694), a collection from which few melodies have passed into common use.
The melody has been attributed incorrectly to J.S. Bach. He has not used it elsewhere and material is not available to enable the originality of his variations of the tune to be tested.
The words of E.C. Homburg’s hymn “Ist Gott mein Schild und Helfersmann,” or “Gott ist mein Schild und Helfersmann in 7 6-line stanzas,” were first published, with a different melody, in Part I of E.C. Homburg’s Geistlicher Lieder (Naumburg, 1659 [1658]).

1. Ist Gott mein Schild und Helfersmann,
was ist es, das mir schaden kann,
weicht alle meine Feinde,
die ihr mir listig nachgestellt,
die ihr mich schmähet in der Welt,
ich habe Gott zum Freunde!

1. While God is constant on my side,
Then all is well ; whate'er betide,
My foes shall fall before me.
Their crafty plots to nought must come,
In shame they'll stand before me dumb;
For God above befriends me.

2. Ist Gott mein Trost und Zuversicht,
kann mich kein Leid anfechten nicht,
weicht alle meine Feinde,
die ihr nur sinnet auf Gefahr,
ich achte solches nicht ein Haar,
ich habe Gott zum Freunde!

2. While God in heaven looks down on me,
I fear not pain nor misery;
My foes shall fall before -me.
Whatever mischief they may plan,
I dare defy them, every man;
For God above befriends me.

3. Ist Gott mein Schild und mein Panier
so kann kein Unglück schaden mir,
weicht alle meine Feinde,
die ich mich ängstet und betrübt
es ist umsonst was ihr verübt,
ich habe Gott zum Freunde!

4. Ist Gott mein Schutz und treuer Hirt,
kein Unfall mich berühren wird,
weicht alle meine Feinde,
die ihr mir stiftet Angst und Pein,
es wird zu eurem Schaden sein,
ich habe Gott zum Freunde!

There's nought can vex ; come all or few,
My foes shall fall before me.
On their own heads the pains shall fall
'Gainst me designed : I dare them all ;
For God above befriends me.

5. Ist Gott mein Retter und Patron,
was acht' ich denn auf Schimpf und Hohn,
weicht alle meine Feinde,
die ihr mich lästert früh und spat
es wird euch richten eure Tat,
ich habe Gott zum Freunde!

6. Ist Gott mein Heil, mein Hilf' und Kraft,
acht' ich nicht, was die Welt auch schafft,
weicht alle meine Feinde,
die ihr auf mich vergället seid,
ihr tut euch selbst gebranntes Leid,

7. Ist Gott mein Beistand in der Not,
was kann mir schaden Sünd' und Tod,
weicht alle meine Feinde!
Tod, Sünde, Teufel, Höll' und Welt,
ihr müsset räumen doch das Feld,
ich habe Gott zum Freunde!
